Chapter 525

In Debraโ€™s memory, the Nichols familyโ€™s true rise began during the generation of Juanโ€™s grandfather, who then passed the reins to Juanโ€™s father. Debra had never heard Juan mention much about his grandfatherโ€™s era, and in this house, there wasnโ€™t even much left to remind anyone of him.

โ€œYes,โ€ Juan confirmed.

โ€œSo, does that mean the Nichols family business has been around for a century?โ€ Debra asked.

Outwardly, the Nichols Group always boasted about being a century-old enterprise. But truthfully, the familyโ€™s wealth and success had only been built up over a few decades. In those early days, they were more like nouveau riche, which was why Melody always hoped her son and grandson would marry well-educated, upper-class women from esteemed families.

โ€œProbably,โ€ Juan replied. โ€œMy grandparents didnโ€™t build their fortune in Seamar City. I donโ€™t know much about their past.โ€

Debra fell into silent thought while Juan lit three sticks of incense. Handing them to her, he seemed to invite her to take part in the ceremony. Debra took them, bowed respectfully, and placed them into the burner.

Juan watched and then said, โ€œItโ€™s done now. Everything is complete.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t really care about all this,โ€ Debra responded flatly. โ€œWhat you should care about is giving Melody what she wantsโ€”a grandson. Sheโ€™s getting old and desperately wants to see the next generation.โ€

She turned to leave the hall. Juan was about to speak, possibly to stop her, but a womanโ€™s loud voice rang out from outside the door.

โ€œLet me in!โ€

โ€œMiss Vargas, you canโ€™t go in. Mr. Nichols is talking to Mrs. Nichols.โ€

โ€œMrs. Nichols? Move aside!โ€

The commotion startled Debra just as she stepped out of the hall. She looked up to see Hester being restrained by two maids in the elevator. As soon as she saw Debra, Hesterโ€™s face twisted with anger.

Juan was annoyed. โ€œWho let her come up here?โ€

โ€œS-sorry, sir. Miss Vargas insisted. We tried to stop her, but she wouldnโ€™t listen.โ€

โ€œYes, Miss Vargas heard that you had returned, and sheโ€ฆโ€

The two maids kept their heads bowed low, knowing all too well about Juanโ€™s temper. It was clear that Hesterโ€™s arrival was the last thing he wanted right now.

โ€œJuan.โ€

Hester took a step forward, attempting to grab Juanโ€™s arm, but he coldly avoided her touch.

โ€œMiss Vargas, please conduct yourself.โ€

Hester bit her lip, her eyes flickering with desperation as she glanced at Debra. Without warning, she dropped to her knees, grabbing onto Debraโ€™s arm.

โ€œMs. Frazier, I beg you, please. Let me be with him. I already belong to Mr. Nichols. Melody has agreed to let me join the family. Juan wants to reconcile with you, but I canโ€™t go on living like this.โ€

Debra looked down at Hester groveling at her feet, a faint smile curving on her lips. โ€œMiss Vargas, youโ€™re not the first woman to kneel in front of me and say those words. But I think youโ€™re barking up the wrong tree.โ€

Then, turning her gaze toward Juan, she added, โ€œThis is something for you to handle.โ€

She shook off Hesterโ€™s grip and stepped aside.

Juan said coldly, โ€œI thought I made it clear to you, so stop trying to make things up. There has never been anything between us.โ€

Hester said desperately, โ€œJuan, I know youโ€™re only saying that because Ms. Frazier is here. But what happened between us is true. Melody told me to stay by your side. That nightโ€ฆโ€
