Chapter 691
Juanโs words annoyed Debra. Michael swiftly stepped in front of her and shot back, โIt seems your taste has taken a bit of a nosedive lately.โ His gaze flicked to Shelia, his tone sharpening. โI wonder what tricks Miss Miles used this time. You seem to have an uncanny connection with the rich and powerful.โ
Sheliaโs smile remained firmly in place. โJuan and I are soul mates, and we are engaged. Since youโve been locked up at the police station, I presume you donโt know about Ms. Frazier and Mr. Houstonโs engagement. But still, the way you two are pulling on each other is indecent.โ
Michaelโs disdain for Shelia was written all over his face, but before he could form a retort, Ben got out of the car and jogged up to them. He said, โMr. Austin, itโs good to see you free at last. Mr. Houston is waiting in the car. We should get going.โ
Shelia saw through the lie instantly, her voice dripping with mockery. โOh, Ben, are you covering for Mr. Austin now? Mr. Houston just let his fiancรฉe come out here late at night to pick up another man? Does that even sound believable to you?โ
โYouโre jumping to conclusions, Ms. Blair,โ Ben replied.
Juan chimed in, โShelia has a point. If Mr. Houston really is here, he should show himself. That way, we can avoid any misunderstandings.โ
His open protection of Shelia disgusted Debra, but unfortunately, Marion hadnโt come with her. If he didnโt show up right now, those people might spread rumors to tear down both her and Michael tomorrow. Michael couldnโt afford another hit to his reputation.
Just as these thoughts swirled through her mind, a figure emerged from the shadows. Sheliaโs smug expression froze the moment she saw who it was. Marion strode over without hesitation, slipping his arm around Debraโs waist as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Debra blinked in surprise, her heart skipping a beat.
Marionโs gaze flicked toward Juan, taking in Shelia clinging to his arm like a lovesick teenager. Raising an eyebrow, he asked, โA few days apart, I didnโt expect you to be back in the arms of another woman.โ
โYou too,โ Juan countered, his gaze softening as it landed on Shelia. โItโs getting late. Letโs head home.โ
โOkay,โ Shelia replied, resting her head against Juanโs shoulder.
But just as they were about to leave, Marionโs voice rang out again. โMr. Nichols, I think I heard your fiancรฉe insult mine just now. I didnโt imagine that, right?โ
Juan and Shelia stopped in their tracks.
Marionโs arm tightened around Debraโs waist, and he sneered, โI donโt take kindly to anyone mistreating my woman. It doesnโt matter who they are.โ
Juanโs eyes narrowed. โYouโre saying Shelia should apologize to Debra?โ
Marion was unperturbed. โBow and apologize.โ
โAre you saying this because you donโt take me seriously?โ Juan said coldly.
Marionโs lips curved into a smile, but his eyes remained cold and unyielding. โIt seems you are quite self-aware.โ
The air between them crackled with tension as neither man showed any sign of backing down. Shelia tugged at Juanโs sleeve and whispered, โItโs fine. This is on me, and Iโll apologize to her.โ
