โI think so,โ Debra replied casually. โNext time, just give me a list. Iโll memorize it.โ
โYouโll have it tonight, and youโd better know it by tomorrow,โ Drake said.
โFor real?โ
โWhy would I lie to you?โ
โAnd the video I asked for?โ
โNot happening.โ
โCome on, Drake. I need it for protection. You saw what happened tonight. Yvonne threw champagne in my face. Next time, it could be acid.โ
โShe wonโt get another chance.โ
โWhat do you meanโฆโ
Before Debra could press further, Kale interrupted, โBoss! Somethingโs wrong with the car!โ
Drake tensed, grabbing Debraโs arm. She tried to pull away, but he commanded, โHold onto the handle.โ
Debra felt the car speeding up unnaturally, and a sinking feeling hit her. Something seemed to be wrong with the brake lines. But Kale seemed to handle the situation with ease. The car was heading straight for the riverbank, and at this speed, theyโd plunge into the water in no time.
Drake rolled down the window by her side. โOn the count of three, hold your breath and close your eyes. Got it?โ
โOkay.โ Debra nodded, her heart in her throat.
โThree.โ
โTwo.โ
โOne.โ
The car hit the water with a deafening crash. Icy water rushed in, stealing Debraโs breath away. Kale swiftly swam out of the car and pulled her out through the window. The three of them crawled onto the riverbank, soaked and gasping for air.
Debra coughed violently, her lungs burning. Drake looked at her sorry state and chuckled.
โYou look like a drowned rat.โ
โVery funny. Iโm injured, you know. A little sympathy wouldnโt kill you.โ
โSympathy? Never heard of it.โ
โBoss, the brake line was cut,โ Kale interjected!
โHow predictable.โ
โIโll get someone to retrieve the car.โ
Debra sneezed, her body wracked with shivers. Both Drake and Kale turned to look at her.
โDonโt blame me. Itโs freezing out here,โ she muttered, her clothes clinging to her like a second skin.
Drake muttered, โGet another car here.โ
โYes, boss.โ Kale made the call, and soon another car arrived.
Debra and Drake climbed in. Her teeth chattered loudly, and Drake glared at the driver.
โCanโt you turn up the heat any higher?โ
โIโm sorry, boss. Right away.โ
โShut the fuck up and drive.โ
โYes.โ
Drake glanced at Debra, noticing her stifling a laugh. โWhatโs so funny?โ
