Debra looked at the crude but sharp blade on the ground. “Why would they want to kill someone?”

“The slums here have chaotic law enforcement,” Marion explained. “People do anything to survive. These kids target wealthy people, fishing for sympathy. They stab, rob, and run.”

Debra frowned. “Aren’t they afraid of being reported to the police?”

“There are no cameras on this street,” Marion said. “They smear dirt on their faces to avoid being recognized. With so many poor kids around, the police can’t tell them apart. Once they save enough money, the kids will try to leave this city. But they only know how to steal and rob. They won’t be able to survive any other way.”

Debra fell silent, realizing she had never imagined the overseas situation to be so dire. The vast gap between the rich and the poor had created this desperate environment.

Marion noticed the pity in her eyes and gently smoothed her furrowed brow. “The situation here is complex, not something we can change. Let’s go.”

Debra nodded in agreement, and Marion drove the car out of the parking garage. She got into the car and asked, “Where are you taking me for a ride?”

“To the largest black market,” Marion replied.
