Chapter 894

After Debra left, Melody finally expressed her displeasure. โ€œYour daughter is a bit unruly.โ€ Liza had insulted and hit her. The shame would be with her for the rest of her life.

โ€œIโ€™ve spoiled Liza,โ€ Bert said. โ€œIโ€™m truly sorry about this. Please go back to your room and rest. Iโ€™ve called for a doctor to examine your face.โ€

His gentle words calmed Melody somewhat, but the memory of Lizaโ€™s harsh words still stung. She said, โ€œI only came to you because I donโ€™t know many people here. I didnโ€™t expect Liza to misunderstand. I wonder what others must think of me now.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re just old acquaintances. No need to worry about what others think,โ€ Bert reassured her. โ€œNo one dares speak ill of the Eaton family here.โ€

The phrase โ€œold acquaintancesโ€ struck a nerve with Melody. If she hadnโ€™t chosen that workaholic Wilbur all those years ago, she might have been the respected Mrs. Eaton today.

Though her life was comfortable, the thought of her unloving husband and disobedient grandson filled her with regret.

โ€œJust old acquaintances?โ€ Melody asked, more to herself than to Bert. She quickly turned and headed upstairs, like a sulking child.

Bert shook his head. Beside him, Carter spoke up. โ€œSir, having Mrs. Nichols Sr. stay here isnโ€™t a good idea. If Miss Eaton finds out, sheโ€™ll cause a scene every time she comes home.โ€

โ€œWhat can I do? I canโ€™t just throw her out,โ€ Bert sighed.

In his youth, he had indeed been fond of Melody. But she had chosen another, and he had returned overseas. Decades had passed, and any feelings he once had were long gone. Melody was no longer the young beauty she once was. Now, she was just an aging woman with a vain heart.

Seeing her again, he couldnโ€™t muster any interest. To him, Melody was merely a stranger he once knew. However, Melody didnโ€™t see it that way.

โ€œBy the way, make sure that Mrs. Houston is well taken care of,โ€ Bert instructed. โ€œDonโ€™t let anyone bully her.โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆโ€ Carter hesitated.

โ€œHer grandfather and I were old friends, comrades in arms back in Seamar City. She is like a granddaughter to me,โ€ Bert said with a look of nostalgia.

โ€œSir, thereโ€™s an age gap,โ€ Carter pointed out. โ€œMs. Frazier is around the same age as Miss Eaton.โ€

Bert bristled. โ€œThat old scoundrel married young. He was a rascal. I, on the other hand, am a gentleman. I only married when I found the right woman. You canโ€™t blame me for marrying late. The Eaton family had so many problems back then, and I had toโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSir, calm down,โ€ Carter said, trying to soothe his rising temper.

Meanwhile, Debra slowed her steps on the grand spiral staircase, trying to eavesdrop. But the Eaton Mansion was too vast, and she couldnโ€™t make out a word.
