Chapter 898

Bert sighed. โ€œIf you had any skills, would I have to resort to this retirement trick? Learn from Fermin. If he were still around, I wouldnโ€™t have all these problems to deal with.โ€

Garland rolled his eyes. โ€œFermin has been dead for years. If he knew how much work was waiting for him, heโ€™d probably prefer to stay in his coffin.โ€

โ€œHe was identifying talent and managing people at 14,โ€ Bert snapped. โ€œHe was the youngest financial scholar, feared and respected by everyone in the company. He was my ideal successor. And look at youโ€”lazy, always chasing after some justice with your newspaper. If it werenโ€™t for that car accident, I wouldnโ€™t have needed you to impersonate him.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right, Dad,โ€ Garland said sarcastically. โ€œFermin is the best. Liza and I combined arenโ€™t half as good as him.โ€

Bert took a deep breath, trying to control his temper. โ€œYou know your uncles are eyeing the familyโ€™s power. If they find out Fermin is dead and I have no successor, theyโ€™ll stop at nothing to take over. What will happen to you and Liza then? I had to make you impersonate Fermin to keep them at bay. If our family falls into chaos, outsiders will swoop in.โ€

Garland had heard this speech a thousand times. He stood up, shrugging. โ€œDad, you know Iโ€™m not Fermin. I just want to run my little newspaper. Our family is rich and powerful enough. There are still so many people in the world who canโ€™t even afford to eat. Compared to them, weโ€™re living too comfortably. Why do we need to keep fighting and grabbing? I think if Fermin were alive, he wouldnโ€™t want to spend the rest of his life as tired as you.โ€

Bert fought back the urge to curse. โ€œIf it werenโ€™t for your mother, I wouldโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDad, youโ€™re getting old. Stop bringing up Morn all the time. Itโ€™s not a good look,โ€ Garland said, cutting him off.

โ€œGet out!โ€ Mr. Eaton threw a cushion at Garland, who ducked and ran out the door, nearly colliding with Carter.

โ€œMr. Eaton?โ€ Carter said, startled.

โ€œKeep an eye on my dad. Make sure he doesnโ€™t get too angry. Heโ€™s old, and itโ€™s not good for his health,โ€ Garland said.

Carter winked at him, leaning in to whisper, โ€œThe CEO of the Nichols Group is here. Heโ€™s waiting outside.โ€

Garland frowned, straightening his cuffs and putting on his gold-rimmed glasses. As he stepped outside, he saw Juan standing there, impeccably dressed in a suit.

โ€œMr. Eaton, itโ€™s a pleasure to meet you,โ€ Juan said formally.

Garland hummed in response. โ€œMy father is inside. I hope you have a productive chat.โ€

As Garland started to walk away, Juan called out, โ€œYou should join us. The conversation might interest you.โ€

โ€œSorry, Iโ€™m busy,โ€ Garland replied without turning back.

Juanโ€™s voice turned cold. โ€œWhat if tomorrowโ€™s headlines announce that the Eaton familyโ€™s eldest son has met with an unfortunate accident and the second son has been impersonating him for years? Are you free now?โ€
