Chapter 9

In the original timeline, Marion's identity was revealed three years after Caleb's death. Debra wondered if her rebirth had unintentionally altered things. Shella's face turned pale at Caleb's words.

โ€œMarion is rumored to be an orphan. How could he be Calebโ€™s grandson?โ€ She wondered if Caleb had heard everything she had just said. Offending Caleb meant no future in the financial world. Shelia looked at Juan, seeking his help.

โ€œMr. Houston, Shelia just spoke without thinking. Considering her young age, please donโ€™t judge her too harshly.โ€

Caleb merely snorted, โ€œHeard there was a genius by Mr. Nicholsโ€™s side. Well, Iโ€™m not impressed.โ€ Sheliaโ€™s face turned ashen. She seemed to have lost all favor with Caleb. Debra witnessed it all. At this point, even if Juan spoke up, it wouldnโ€™t help. Caleb was already merciful enough not to kick her out. Juan fell silent.

When Calebโ€™s gaze fell on Debra, it softened. โ€œYouโ€™re from the Frazier family, right?โ€ Debra came to her senses and nodded. โ€œIโ€™m Debra.โ€

โ€œBarry wasnโ€™t much to look at when he was young, but his granddaughter turned out to be beautiful. Forty years ago, Barry and I swore brotherhood. Now, youโ€™ve grown up.โ€

โ€œBrotherhood?โ€ Debra remembered her grandfatherโ€™s carefree attitude. He was never involved in family matters and passed away early. She never heard of him knowing Caleb.

While she was at a loss, Caleb approached and asked, โ€œAre you married?โ€ Debra nodded, โ€œYes.โ€ โ€œTo which lad?โ€ Debra glanced at Juan. Calebโ€™s face fell when he saw Juan. โ€œNormanโ€™s grandson? Huh!โ€

Juan smiled, saying, โ€œMy grandpa said a lot about you too. Guess you guys were pretty close.โ€

โ€œWho was close to him?โ€ Shelia was left standing there awkwardly. After Caleb left, Shelia tugged at Juanโ€™s sleeve. โ€œMr. Nichols, I want to leave.โ€ Juan glanced at the sky outside. โ€œIโ€™ll give you a ride.โ€ Shelia asked, โ€œWhat about Debra?โ€ Juan glanced at Debra conversing happily with Caleb and said indifferently, โ€œShe can find her way home.โ€ Sheliaโ€™s eyes held a hint of jealousy towards Debra. โ€˜Why does Debra get Calebโ€™s favor? Itโ€™s not fair.โ€™

Debra saw Juan and Shelia leaving the venue. Joe approached, whispering, โ€œMr. Nichols is taking Miss Miles back to the dorm.โ€ โ€œI see.โ€ Joe expected Debra to react emotionally, but her calm demeanor surprised him.

โ€œIs Mr. Nichols taking someone else home?โ€ Marion said. Debra didnโ€™t feel embarrassed. โ€œIsnโ€™t it obvious?โ€ Not only did she see it, but everyone else did too. Twice now, Juan had disregarded her. He escorted another woman home and left her behind at the banquet. Tomorrow, who knew what rumors would spread in high-society circles?

โ€œArenโ€™t you angry?โ€ โ€œNot at all.โ€ In her last life, sheโ€™d had enough of caring about Juan. She wouldnโ€™t repeat the same mistake. Marion looked at Debraโ€™s profile and, despite her indifferent demeanor, saw a hint of loneliness in her eyes.

โ€œMay I have the honor of escorting you home?โ€ It was late, and Debra had enough of this place. Joe stood by. โ€œMr. Houston, I will escort Mrs. Nichols home.โ€ Marion ignored Joe, waiting for Debraโ€™s response. Debra stood up. โ€œThank you.โ€ Marion stood by Debraโ€™s side like a gentleman, and Joe was dumbfounded.

He didnโ€™t know how to explain this to Juan later. Debra followed Marion into the car, and Randy served as the driver. Only Marion could get this guy to play that role.

โ€œDude, Iโ€™ve been waiting for you outside for hours, and youโ€™re inside flirting?โ€ Debra could tell Randyโ€™s speechlessness from the rearview mirror.

โ€œLetโ€™s drop Miss Miles home first,โ€ Marion said. โ€œHey, arenโ€™t we supposed toโ€ฆโ€ Before Randy could finish, Marion kicked the back of the driverโ€™s seat. Seeing Marionโ€™s warning glare in the mirror, Randy fell silent.

โ€œYou got something to do later?โ€ Debra asked. โ€œNot that important.โ€ โ€œYou donโ€™t have to drive me. I can go back on my own.โ€

โ€œSeamar City may seem peaceful, but itโ€™s dangerous, especially since youโ€™re Juanโ€™s wife.โ€ Debra raised an eyebrow. โ€œJuan is different from you. Heโ€™s a legitimate businessman.โ€

โ€œIn this kind of place full of sharks, even Juan may not be clean,โ€ Marion said flatly. Debra didnโ€™t argue. In her last life, she had been married to Juan for many years, but he never let her in on family matters. Though Juan seemed like an honest businessman on the surface, he wielded absolute power in this city, so how could he be clean? He just hid it better. Marion didnโ€™t bother hiding anything. After all, he had no weaknesses, as was rumored.

โ€œMs. Frazier, here we are.โ€ Randy parked the car at the Nichols familyโ€™s gate. The lights inside were off, indicating that Juan hadnโ€™t returned yet. โ€œThanks for the ride, Mr. Houston and Mr. Osborne.โ€ Debra got out of the car. Marion watched her enter before rolling up the window. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œYou remember we had a deal with Aaron at twelve?โ€ Randy glanced at the time. โ€œWeโ€™re late!โ€ โ€œLet him wait,โ€ Marion said, โ€œIf that guy canโ€™t produce it, Iโ€™ll chop off his hand.โ€

As Debra pushed open the door, she felt something was off. Sophie usually left a light on in the living room, knowing she was afraid of the dark, but now it was off.

โ€œJuan? Are you back?โ€ No response came from inside the house. Debra turned to leave when suddenly a hand covered her mouth from behind.

โ€œDamn you, bitch! Itโ€™s all your fault! All my moneyโ€™s gone!โ€ Debra tried to break free, but the man was strong. In her struggle, she managed to pull out a lighter from her bag and burn the manโ€™s wrist. The man grunted and stepped back. Debra took the chance to rush out. โ€˜Juan! Juan!โ€™ Debra muttered his name inwardly as she ran. She grabbed her phone to call Juan.

โ€œHello?โ€ โ€œJuan! Where are you? Come back! Thereโ€™s someone at home.โ€ Before Debra could finish, her phone was knocked to the ground. In front of her, a vanโ€™s headlights blinded her. On the other end of the line, Juan frowned. โ€œDebra?โ€

โ€œWanna save your wife? Bring ten billion dollars!โ€ Juanโ€™s eyes narrowed as the phone disconnected.

โ€œMr. Nichols, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Shelia noticed Juanโ€™s unusual expression. Juan gritted his teeth. โ€œGo home!โ€ The driver was taken aback. โ€œSir, weโ€™re almost at the dormitory building.โ€ โ€œI told you to drive home!โ€ โ€œYes, sir!โ€ Shelia had never seen Juan so nervous.

โ€œDebraโ€™s in trouble.โ€ โ€œDebra? What happened to her?โ€ Juan didnโ€™t have time for Shelia. He just felt that the voice was familiar but couldnโ€™t recall where heโ€™d heard it.

In the deep night, Randy parked the car outside an abandoned factory. Marion got out of the car, seeing that Aaron and his men hadnโ€™t arrived yet. Randy cursed, โ€œDamn it, this guy is later than us. Inviting a beating.โ€

Marion lit a cigarette. Not far away, a van came speeding in. Aaron tumbled out of the car.

โ€œMr. Houston, Mr. Osborne, I was caught up in something,โ€ Aaron ambled obsequiously. โ€œThe money?โ€ Randy asked.

โ€œLet me explain. Itโ€™s all because of a bitch who messed up my plans. I kidnapped her and took some time on the road. Mr. Houstonโ€ฆโ€ Randy impatiently interrupted, โ€œCut the crap. Iโ€™m only asking about the thing we wanted.โ€

โ€œIt was bought by that bitch! But itโ€™s okay. Her husbandโ€™s rich. Iโ€™ve already had someone call her husband. If he wants to save his wife, heโ€™ll have to pay a ransom. That moneyโ€™s worth a lot more than that land!โ€

โ€œMake it quick. Time is money,โ€ Marion said. โ€œDonโ€™t worry! I talked to Juan, if he doesnโ€™t come up with ten billion dollars within an hourโ€ฆโ€

Marionโ€™s pupils contracted. He grabbed Aaronโ€™s collar and demanded, โ€œWho did you say?โ€ โ€œJuan Nicholsโ€ฆโ€ Aaron trembled in fear. โ€œWho did you kidnap?โ€ Marion asked sternly. โ€œIโ€™ll kill his wife.โ€

โ€œDebra Frazier. Sheโ€™s Juanโ€™s wife! Itโ€™s all because she snatched that piece of land that couldโ€™ve fetched billions, so Iโ€ฆโ€ Before Aaron could finish, Marion kicked him in the chest, sending him sprawling. โ€œWhere is she?โ€ Marion asked.
