Chapter 9
In the original timeline, Marion's identity was revealed three years after Caleb's death. Debra wondered if her rebirth had unintentionally altered things. Shella's face turned pale at Caleb's words.
โMarion is rumored to be an orphan. How could he be Calebโs grandson?โ She wondered if Caleb had heard everything she had just said. Offending Caleb meant no future in the financial world. Shelia looked at Juan, seeking his help.
โMr. Houston, Shelia just spoke without thinking. Considering her young age, please donโt judge her too harshly.โ
Caleb merely snorted, โHeard there was a genius by Mr. Nicholsโs side. Well, Iโm not impressed.โ Sheliaโs face turned ashen. She seemed to have lost all favor with Caleb. Debra witnessed it all. At this point, even if Juan spoke up, it wouldnโt help. Caleb was already merciful enough not to kick her out. Juan fell silent.
When Calebโs gaze fell on Debra, it softened. โYouโre from the Frazier family, right?โ Debra came to her senses and nodded. โIโm Debra.โ
โBarry wasnโt much to look at when he was young, but his granddaughter turned out to be beautiful. Forty years ago, Barry and I swore brotherhood. Now, youโve grown up.โ
โBrotherhood?โ Debra remembered her grandfatherโs carefree attitude. He was never involved in family matters and passed away early. She never heard of him knowing Caleb.
While she was at a loss, Caleb approached and asked, โAre you married?โ Debra nodded, โYes.โ โTo which lad?โ Debra glanced at Juan. Calebโs face fell when he saw Juan. โNormanโs grandson? Huh!โ

Juan smiled, saying, โMy grandpa said a lot about you too. Guess you guys were pretty close.โ
โWho was close to him?โ Shelia was left standing there awkwardly. After Caleb left, Shelia tugged at Juanโs sleeve. โMr. Nichols, I want to leave.โ Juan glanced at the sky outside. โIโll give you a ride.โ Shelia asked, โWhat about Debra?โ Juan glanced at Debra conversing happily with Caleb and said indifferently, โShe can find her way home.โ Sheliaโs eyes held a hint of jealousy towards Debra. โWhy does Debra get Calebโs favor? Itโs not fair.โ
Debra saw Juan and Shelia leaving the venue. Joe approached, whispering, โMr. Nichols is taking Miss Miles back to the dorm.โ โI see.โ Joe expected Debra to react emotionally, but her calm demeanor surprised him.
โIs Mr. Nichols taking someone else home?โ Marion said. Debra didnโt feel embarrassed. โIsnโt it obvious?โ Not only did she see it, but everyone else did too. Twice now, Juan had disregarded her. He escorted another woman home and left her behind at the banquet. Tomorrow, who knew what rumors would spread in high-society circles?
โArenโt you angry?โ โNot at all.โ In her last life, sheโd had enough of caring about Juan. She wouldnโt repeat the same mistake. Marion looked at Debraโs profile and, despite her indifferent demeanor, saw a hint of loneliness in her eyes.
โMay I have the honor of escorting you home?โ It was late, and Debra had enough of this place. Joe stood by. โMr. Houston, I will escort Mrs. Nichols home.โ Marion ignored Joe, waiting for Debraโs response. Debra stood up. โThank you.โ Marion stood by Debraโs side like a gentleman, and Joe was dumbfounded.

He didnโt know how to explain this to Juan later. Debra followed Marion into the car, and Randy served as the driver. Only Marion could get this guy to play that role.
โDude, Iโve been waiting for you outside for hours, and youโre inside flirting?โ Debra could tell Randyโs speechlessness from the rearview mirror.
โLetโs drop Miss Miles home first,โ Marion said. โHey, arenโt we supposed toโฆโ Before Randy could finish, Marion kicked the back of the driverโs seat. Seeing Marionโs warning glare in the mirror, Randy fell silent.
โYou got something to do later?โ Debra asked. โNot that important.โ โYou donโt have to drive me. I can go back on my own.โ
โSeamar City may seem peaceful, but itโs dangerous, especially since youโre Juanโs wife.โ Debra raised an eyebrow. โJuan is different from you. Heโs a legitimate businessman.โ
โIn this kind of place full of sharks, even Juan may not be clean,โ Marion said flatly. Debra didnโt argue. In her last life, she had been married to Juan for many years, but he never let her in on family matters. Though Juan seemed like an honest businessman on the surface, he wielded absolute power in this city, so how could he be clean? He just hid it better. Marion didnโt bother hiding anything. After all, he had no weaknesses, as was rumored.
โMs. Frazier, here we are.โ Randy parked the car at the Nichols familyโs gate. The lights inside were off, indicating that Juan hadnโt returned yet. โThanks for the ride, Mr. Houston and Mr. Osborne.โ Debra got out of the car. Marion watched her enter before rolling up the window. โLetโs go.โ
โYou remember we had a deal with Aaron at twelve?โ Randy glanced at the time. โWeโre late!โ โLet him wait,โ Marion said, โIf that guy canโt produce it, Iโll chop off his hand.โ
As Debra pushed open the door, she felt something was off. Sophie usually left a light on in the living room, knowing she was afraid of the dark, but now it was off.

โJuan? Are you back?โ No response came from inside the house. Debra turned to leave when suddenly a hand covered her mouth from behind.
โDamn you, bitch! Itโs all your fault! All my moneyโs gone!โ Debra tried to break free, but the man was strong. In her struggle, she managed to pull out a lighter from her bag and burn the manโs wrist. The man grunted and stepped back. Debra took the chance to rush out. โJuan! Juan!โ Debra muttered his name inwardly as she ran. She grabbed her phone to call Juan.
โHello?โ โJuan! Where are you? Come back! Thereโs someone at home.โ Before Debra could finish, her phone was knocked to the ground. In front of her, a vanโs headlights blinded her. On the other end of the line, Juan frowned. โDebra?โ
โWanna save your wife? Bring ten billion dollars!โ Juanโs eyes narrowed as the phone disconnected.
โMr. Nichols, whatโs wrong?โ Shelia noticed Juanโs unusual expression. Juan gritted his teeth. โGo home!โ The driver was taken aback. โSir, weโre almost at the dormitory building.โ โI told you to drive home!โ โYes, sir!โ Shelia had never seen Juan so nervous.
โDebraโs in trouble.โ โDebra? What happened to her?โ Juan didnโt have time for Shelia. He just felt that the voice was familiar but couldnโt recall where heโd heard it.
In the deep night, Randy parked the car outside an abandoned factory. Marion got out of the car, seeing that Aaron and his men hadnโt arrived yet. Randy cursed, โDamn it, this guy is later than us. Inviting a beating.โ

Marion lit a cigarette. Not far away, a van came speeding in. Aaron tumbled out of the car.
โMr. Houston, Mr. Osborne, I was caught up in something,โ Aaron ambled obsequiously. โThe money?โ Randy asked.
โLet me explain. Itโs all because of a bitch who messed up my plans. I kidnapped her and took some time on the road. Mr. Houstonโฆโ Randy impatiently interrupted, โCut the crap. Iโm only asking about the thing we wanted.โ
โIt was bought by that bitch! But itโs okay. Her husbandโs rich. Iโve already had someone call her husband. If he wants to save his wife, heโll have to pay a ransom. That moneyโs worth a lot more than that land!โ
โMake it quick. Time is money,โ Marion said. โDonโt worry! I talked to Juan, if he doesnโt come up with ten billion dollars within an hourโฆโ
Marionโs pupils contracted. He grabbed Aaronโs collar and demanded, โWho did you say?โ โJuan Nicholsโฆโ Aaron trembled in fear. โWho did you kidnap?โ Marion asked sternly. โIโll kill his wife.โ
โDebra Frazier. Sheโs Juanโs wife! Itโs all because she snatched that piece of land that couldโve fetched billions, so Iโฆโ Before Aaron could finish, Marion kicked him in the chest, sending him sprawling. โWhere is she?โ Marion asked.
