Chapter 937
Marion's men tied up Lara and brought her before Debra. โStay still.โ
Lara fidgeted and lowered her head.
Debra demanded, โI kept my promise to you. What about you? Did you already give the phone to Drake?โ
โIโm sorry,โ Lara stammered. โThat phone was useless to you. I had to give it to Drake to gain his trust.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โAfter I got off the ship, I checked the phone. There was nothing on it. A useless phone couldnโt incriminate Drake. I had to get back to his side.โ
โSo, you sacrificed me to gain his trust?โ
She could understand Lara selling her out to survive, but she couldnโt forgive the repeated deception. If it had helped bring down Drake or provided evidence against him, it might have been worth it. But there was nothing. All their efforts had been in vain.
โIโm truly sorry. I had to stay by Drakeโs side, gain his trust, and find evidence against him.โ
โAnd did you succeed?โ
โLโฆโ
โYouโve been with Drake for a long time. Does he trust you? Or have you gotten close to the core of his business?โ
โLโฆโ
โYouโre just his maid, living with hatred. You never truly planned to take him down. All these years, youโve failed to gain his trust and only pushed me into the fire.โ
Debraโs words cut deep, and Lara turned pale. For years, she had thought of nothing but revenge, but her abilities were limited. She told herself that each passing day brought her closer to Drakeโs trust and that one day she would reach the core of his business. She even hoped that after Yvonneโs death, Drake would use her to control Conrad. But Drake had abandoned both her and the Sharp family. When Drake came overseas to ally with the Eaton family, she had almost lost hope. It was only when Debra appeared that she thought she could finally fulfill her purpose. But even that had failed.
โDo whatever you want with me,โ Lara said, resigned to her fate.
Marion asked Debra, โWhat do you think, honey?โ
His voice sent a shiver down Laraโs spine.
Debra said, โIf youโve got useful information about Drakeโs business, I might consider sparing you. If not, Iโll send you back. Iโm sure he will be very curious about what happened to you.โ
โNo, please donโt send me back,โ Lara pleaded.
She might survive here since Debra wasnโt a ruthless person. Drake was different. He would suspect her of conspiring with Debra and Marion. He might kill her for it.
โAs you said, Iโve been by Drakeโs side for years, but heโs always treated me like a servant. Iโve barely even been in his study, let alone had access to any of his secrets.โ She paused, biting her lip.
