Chapter 992
Garland trailed behind Debra, looking more like a reluctant son dragged along by his mother than a boyfriend on a date. Debra glanced at him, recalling how confident he used to be at the Eaton Mansion. But in Seamar City, he seemed timid, barely holding his head up.
Garland cleared his throat and asked, โWhatโs that over there?โ
The employee leading the way explained, โThose machines in the back arenโt meant for the public. Unlike the ones out here that dispense toys, they can pay out real money. Much more exciting than any fishing game, right?โ
Garland whispered, โBut I heard these kinds of games are banned.โ
โWell, weโre playing it low-key. I wouldnโt tell just anyone.โ
โOh, so you work here, huh?โ
โYeah, I help the boss bring in customers.โ
โSo, these machines pay out cash on the spot?โ
โYeah.โ
โYour boss must be quite the businessman. Iโm in business too, and this seems like a very profitable industry. Think you could hook me up sometime?โ
โIโll have to ask the boss. If he agrees, I have no problem.โ
In no time, Garland was chatting up the employee like they were old pals. Debra was impressed. Garland seemed incompetent, but he had his areas of expertise. His time at the news agency hadnโt gone to waste.
It looked like he had been playing the fool earlier. Garland said to the employee, โThose machines look familiar. I used to play them in Orkgate. Your boss wouldnโt happen to be Mr. Lowe, would it? Iโve met him a few times.โ
He was testing the waters too aggressively. Debra wasted no time stepping in. โDarling, stop bragging. People like us canโt just meet someone like Mr. Lowe. Weโve only seen him from afar at those banquets. He wouldnโt even remember us, let alone do business with us.โ
Garland was confused. Drake almost became his brother-in-law, and his status was higher. But the employee bought it, thinking Garland was sulking because his bluff had been called.
โIโm just an employee,โ he consoled. โThe bossโs identity is a secret, but youโve got a good eye. Our machines are the best, shipped straight from Orkgate. Top quality and all legitimate.โ
Debraโs mind raced. If the machines were from Orkgate, then Drake had to be involved.
They stood in front of a door. The employee pushed it open to reveal a smoky room filled with the clanging of slot machines.
โCome on in,โ the employee gestured.
Just as they were about to enter, a familiar voice rang out. โGet out of my way. How dare you touch me? Do you have a death wish?โ
