Chapter 104

In the ward, silence reigned except for the sound of chewing. Neither grandfather nor grandson spoke. Although the nurse who served Old Mr. Reed was curious, she didn't dare ask. After all, these two were the most powerful men in Emerald City.

Finally, when Old Mr. Reed was nearly finished eating, he said, "I hear you haven't been home for days."

"Yes," Jason replied indifferently. He wasn't surprised; Old Mr. Reed had informants everywhere, even in his own house.

"Where are you staying?"

"Outside," Jason replied.

"Why?" Old Mr. Reed asked.

"It's too quiet at home," he said casually, picking up a shrimp and slowly peeling it.

"Speaking of which," Old Mr. Reed continued, "you should have a girlfriend by now. I'll have my secretary compile a list of eligible young ladies in the city. You can choose one." His tone suggested it was as simple as picking out clothes.

Jason's fingers, holding the shrimp, paused. Then he said, "There's no need."

Old Mr. Reed narrowed his eyes. "What's wrong?"

"If it's just to have a child to inherit the Reed family," Jason said, "I can choose my own candidate." He'd previously believed the mother's identity was unimportant. But now, he hoped that child's mother would be Grace. It would be good for the child to inherit both their bloodlines.

"A candidate?" Old Mr. Reed was shocked. "Could it be that you"

At that moment, Jason's phone rang. Startled, he pulled a cheap phone from his pocket. Seeing the caller ID, he stood and answered. Hearing the voice on the other end, his face paled.

"Jay save save me"

Though hoarse and fragmented, he recognized Grace's voice instantly. Before he could respond, the call ended. He tried calling back, but got a busy signal.

"Something's happened to Grace," he murmured, his face deathly pale. He turned to Old Mr. Reed. "Grandfather, I have to go."

He rushed from the ward.

A shadow crossed Old Mr. Reed's face. His grandson's expression reminded him of his son's obsession with that woman. His son had betrayed his family and fortune for her. And what had become of him? He mused that excessive love often ends in tragedy. What kind of woman had so captivated Jason?

Grace hadn't expected her relatives to drug her. Although she hadn't drunk alcohol at dinner, she'd had some soft drinks. Now she was weak and powerless. Grandma tried to intervene, but was stopped by the third aunt, while her uncles carried Grace away to meet the Miller family.
