Chapter 163

“If it were her, she wouldn’t have cried,” he blurted out. She was speechless for a moment. When her fear escalated, she shouted, “Who is she? Who is that woman?! Brian, ‘she’ is the only person you love, right? But you’ll never have her. If you don’t care about other people’s feelings, she will eventually stop caring about yours!”

Brian stopped and turned, his sharp eyes fixed on Emily. A bone-chilling frost filled his usually cold gaze. He glanced at her before leaving.

Emily fell to the ground. His earlier gaze had felt like a death threat. She felt utterly doomed.

Grace walked out of the restaurant. The cold wind eased the burning sensation on her cheek. The evening had been a farce.

Her phone rang. It was a relative from her mother’s hometown. The relative immediately said her grandmother had been hospitalized. “Grace, your uncles, aunt, and cousins are still detained. The police say they’ll face lengthy prison sentences. If that happens, your grandmother will die alone!”

They wanted Grace to drop the charges and secure her relatives’ release.

“For your grandmother’s sake, let them go!” the relative pleaded. “We’re still family; we shouldn’t go this far!”

Grace found this ridiculous. Why didn’t they mention her uncle’s attempted deception? Her grandmother was her only remaining family.

After the call, Grace hailed a taxi and headed to the small county town.

“Young lady, it’s late; the fare will be an extra 300!” the driver said.

“I know,” Grace replied. She had to see her grandmother.

At the hospital, seeing her grandmother lying in bed, tubes attached, Grace’s nose tingled. Her grandmother, her sole support, was so frail. Her wrinkled face was ashen, as if her life was nearing its end. Her grandmother hadn't revealed the severity of her condition.

“What are you doing here? This is all your fault!” her aunt shrieked, threatening to attack her.

Her uncle restrained his wife and pleaded, “Grace, why didn’t you tell us you’d befriended a wealthy person? This wouldn’t have happened. We only wanted to marry you off to the Millers for your own good, to secure your future!”
