Chapter 170
She hadn't slept well the night before. In addition to her grandmother's problems, her own were worsening. Right now, Grace felt lightheaded.
After walking for a while, she brushed against a passerby and stumbled. Fortunately, her thick clothing prevented serious injury.
As she was getting up, she heard hurried footsteps. Someone quickly helped her to her feet. Grace looked up, shocked to see Chase.
"Why are you?" she began.
"My car's just down the road. Let me give you a ride home." Grace might have refused, but he was still worried about her. He'd been following her slowly in his car.
"No, I can get home myself."
"You fell just from brushing against someone! How can I let you go home alone? My car's right there. If we stand around, I'll get a ticket!"
Seeing his persistence, Grace sighed and followed him to his car.
Chase drove toward Grace's apartment.
"Don't think I expect anything in return for the ride. I know I'm not good enough for you, not like your ex-boyfriend. I'm just worried about you. I'll feel better knowing you got home safely," Chase said earnestly.
"Thanks." The past felt like a distant dream. Now, she felt inadequate compared to him. Who would marry someone with a criminal record?
Chase hesitated. "Two days ago, I saw you getting into a Porsche. If you've found someone, I I'll be happy for you. But I'm worried you're being taken advantage of. You should get to know him better before"
Grace interrupted. "That wasn't a date. I accidentally picked up something of his, so he bought me lunch as thanks."
"Oh, I see." Hope flickered in his eyes.
Soon, they reached her apartment building. She looked at him. "Chase, you're a nice person, but we're not suitable. Don't waste your time on me. You'll find someone better!"
"I think you're good enough," Chase blushed. "I can wait for you"
"Like you said, my ex-boyfriend was wealthy. I'll either stay single or find someone of comparable status. We're not compatible, understand?" Grace stated bluntly.
Perhaps this is the only way to make him give up. It's better to hurt him now, before things get too serious. Chase is a good person; I wouldn't do this if he weren't so persistent.
Chase looked dejected, staring blankly.
"Okay, I'll go. Thanks for today, but you don't need to give me rides anymore." She opened the door, got out, and headed toward the security guard.
Behind her, the sound of a car driving away faded into the distance.
