Chapter 286

If she continued working there, she might face "special treatment" and unwanted attention from colleagues.

"I quit. I want a new job," Grace said.

"I see." The director surmised that Grace had influential backing securing her a better position. After some persuasion, he approved her resignation, foregoing her leave deductions and paying her a month's salary immediately, expedited by the finance department.

Once outside the Sanitation Service Center, Grace breathed deeply. The extra month's salary was a goodwill gesture from the director, likely influenced by Jason. Ideally, she would have refused, but her grandmother's hospitalization, dwindling funds borrowed from Lina, and the prospect of further expenses, prevented her from doing so. She couldn't afford to add more debt to her existing one.

Grace said goodbye to Claire Watts.

Learning of Grace's resignation, Claire exclaimed, "Why did you quit so suddenly?"

"I've been taking too much leave," Grace replied.

"It was an accident. Just take leave; I can handle more," Claire said, noticing Grace's bandaged fingers. "How's your hand?"

"The gauze comes off in two days. It's fine," Grace said.

"What kind of job are you looking for?" Claire asked with concern.

"Maybe food delivery," Grace replied.

"That's hard work," Claire sighed. It was more strenuous than sweeping floors.

"I'm not afraid of hard work," Grace said with a faint smile. Her only fear was a lack of money. One only truly understands the value of money when in need.

Back at the Reed residence, Jason awaited her on the sofa.

"Come here," he said, extending a hand.

Hesitantly, she approached him. He gently took her hands, stroking her bandaged fingers. "Where have you been?"

"At the Sanitation Service Center," she replied.

"The driver said you refused a ride and took the bus?" he asked.

"I don't like being picked up," she said.

"Good you're back. He didn't see you get off the bus. Fifteen minutes later, and I'd have the whole city searching for you," Jason said calmly.

Grace was startled. "The whole cityโ€ฆ looking for me?" That seemed excessive.

"Didn't I tell you to rest? Why were you at the Sanitation Service Center?" He instructed a servant to bring her medication and gauze.

"I resigned," she answered honestly; he would likely find out anyway.

"You want a new job? Let me see if I can find you one," he offered.
