Chapter 443
“I can sell the kitchenware and bedding at the secondhand shop later. I’ll take the clothes and shoes back; I can still wear them.”
Jason looked at the clothes and shoes Grace wanted to keep. They were old, though well-made, the styles outdated and some colors faded. He understood they were likely from before her imprisonment.
He said nothing. Even if he wanted to give her money for new clothes, he’d have to proceed slowly. He was afraid of frightening her; she was only just beginning to lower her guard.
“Why don’t you wait here? I’ll be back soon,” Grace said, picking up the packed kitchenware and bedding.
Jason was faster, taking them from her. “Let me carry them. Please open the door.”
“Oh,” she replied, opening the door.
Jason left, carrying the kitchenware in one hand and the bedding in the other. Grace quickly closed the door and caught up.
“Why don’t I carry something? My hands are empty,” Grace offered, seeing his burden.
“There’s no need. Just lead the way.” His tone was firm.
Grace didn’t argue, leading the way, occasionally glancing at Jason. He looked like a city laborer returning home for the holidays—a striking contrast in his suit and tie, handsome features. I suppose he’s never done this before, she thought.
They reached the junction. Grace approached the usual junk collector. “Sir, I have some kitchenware and bedding. Will you buy them?”
“Of course,” the man replied, smiling broadly.
However, seeing the well-dressed Jason carrying the items, he was momentarily stunned. He examined them, muttering to himself, then pulled Grace aside. He whispered, “Young lady, don’t be fooled by appearances. He may look good, but he might not be a good person. If he were truly rich, he wouldn’t have you selling these things; he’d just throw them away.”
Grace knew the man was looking out for her. “He’s my boyfriend, and I know him well,” she said. She knew his background, personality, home, family… she’d even met his father. (Though, she admitted to herself, that first meeting with Old Master Reed hadn’t been pleasant.)
The man sighed, feeling Grace was in too deep to help.
Grace sold the items for $100. After receiving the money, she and Jason returned to their rented unit.
“What did the man say to you?” he asked, having noticed their private conversation.
Grace teased, “He warned me not to be cheated by you. Would you lie to me?”
