Chapter 76
“Hera…” Harrison looked at his daughter, his face ashen. “Is this girl foolish? Doesn’t she see Helena is goading her?”
Herman’s face darkened. “All of you had better restrain yourselves!” No matter which side lost, it would bring shame to the entire Lewis family. He could not afford to lose his dignity.
Seeing his father’s displeasure, Hubert hastily said, “Helena, change your conditions. No one will benefit from this.”
Helena glanced up, laughing. “How about this? If you lose, you’ll kiss Hunter Hill!”
“No way. Choose something else…” Hera was unsure. If she lost, she certainly couldn't kiss Hunter; her first kiss should be given to someone she liked.
Hubert whispered, “Helena, change it. Mr. Kai is still here. If you lose and kiss Hunter, how will Mr. Kai feel?”
“I think you’d be better off betting money!” Skadi said casually, naturally siding with her best friend.
Helena replied without hesitation, “Alright, let’s bet money, then!”
Hera looked at Lauren uneasily. Her mother had always taught her not to gamble. Lauren pulled a purple bank card from her bag. “There’s seventy thousand dollars in here…”
Harrison swallowed hard. “Our daughter’s ignorant, so be it. But are you ignorant too?” This seventy thousand might be his wife’s last possession.
Lauren turned to Harrison. “Bring out your secret stash as well…”
“I… I don’t have any secret stash!” Harrison quickly covered his pocket.
Lauren squinted. “From now on, you can sleep on the sofa!” This man wasn’t even willing to support his own daughter. Was he really her father?
Harrison almost wished he could slap himself. Why was he so tactless? He gritted his teeth and pulled a silver card from his pocket. “There’s forty thousand dollars in here…”
Hera also produced her bank card. “I have one hundred and ten thousand dollars on this card!” This included a recent supplier payment and money her mother had given her for Nash’s clothes.
Helena scoffed. “Are you seriously trying to bet two hundred and twenty thousand dollars?” She immediately produced her own card. “If we’re gambling, let’s go big. I have one and a half million dollars here!”
Hera’s face went pale. One and a half million! Even selling everything wouldn't cover it.
Skadi bit her lip. “Hera, gamble with her. I’ll cover the rest!” She produced her cards. “I have about one and a third million dollars here!”
Helena, who intended to humiliate Hera, hadn't expected Skadi's intervention. She’d saved that one and a half million over two years.
Hubert leisurely sipped his drink. “What’s there to fear? Mr. Kai’s betrothal gift is thirty million. A mere one and a half million is nothing to us!”
Rooney anxiously countered, “But that thirty million is frozen. We can only access it after Helena and Mr. Kai register their marriage!”
Hubert laughed. “Mr. Kai has already given the engagement ring. Do you think he’ll back out?” He looked at Harrison, whose face was darkening. “Besides, with Mr. Kai here, it’ll be hard for us to lose…”
Relieved, Rooney gave Lauren a complacent look.
Helena approached Kai, whispering something in his ear. He followed her to the main table, glass in hand.
Hera held Skadi’s hand tightly, her face tense. This was one and a half million dollars. Harrison and Lauren were so nervous their breathing nearly stopped.
Herman sighed helplessly, watching the two families. While other families were harmonious, his was rife with conflict, both open and covert. It was unpleasant to behold. Meanwhile, Nash stood like a statue, arms crossed.
