Chapter 17

“Oh.” After hearing Selena’s words, Yarrick gave a small nod. His emotions suddenly became hard to describe.

He had been hoping Hailey would wake up, praying she’d stay by his side for at least three months, even more so that she’d fully recover.

As for the possibility of divorce, he hadn’t really cared all that much. Selena had told him from the beginning that Hailey would definitely divorce him. He was just a stand-in groom, a good luck charm. There was never any real relationship between them.

And yet, after all this time spent by her side, Yarrick had gotten used to having this beautiful woman in his life. Especially whenever he held her hand, whispered teasing words, and touched her cheeks.

Somewhere along the way, she had found a place in his heart.

He couldn’t even explain what he felt for her. Maybe it was because he knew that he would never get the chance to have something like this again.

His thoughts were a mess as he walked out of the ICU. Soon, he arrived at the general ward area.

“Room 201.” He headed up to the second floor and quickly found the room. Standing at the door, Yarrick took a deep breath. He was about to see Hailey awake.

He wondered if Hailey could recognize him. Perhaps she was too embarrassed to see him. Would he still be allowed to call her “honey”? Would he still be able to hold her hand and kiss her? All these thoughts ran through his mind. Still, he raised his hand and knocked gently.

There was a shuffle of movement from inside, then silence.

“Come in.” It was an older woman’s voice—Selena’s.

Yarrick pushed the door open. It was a private room that was surprisingly spacious.

Hailey was lying in bed, her cheeks a soft shade of pink. A mysterious expression flickered across her face. Beside her sat Selena.

“Ms. Selena,” Yarrick greeted politely.

“Oh, Yarrick, you’re here.” Selena gave him a warm smile and an approving look.

“Yeah, I went to the ICU first, then found out she had already been moved. That’s great news!” Yarrick walked over to the bed, but with Selena present, he didn’t dare reach for Hailey’s hand.

“Yarrick, Hailey’s doing very well. After a few more days here, she should be ready to go home.”

“Really? You mean she’s almost fully recovered? That’s incredible!”

Yarrick said nothing. He took the folder and opened it. The words “Divorce Agreement” were printed in bold at the top of the page. He had known this day would come eventually. But still, no matter what happened next, at least Hailey was going to be okay.

“Yes, Yarrick. Thank you.” Selena nodded, then reached into her bag and pulled out a folder. “Here, take a look at this.”

“Yarrick, once you sign the agreement, I’ll transfer two million dollars to you immediately. Of course, if you want to think it over, I understand. You and Hailey are still legally married, and she really could use someone by her side. But that’s something you two need to discuss together,” Selena said gently. Selena watched him intently. Her gaze was calm yet hopeful.
