“Ethan, any idea why HR wants to see me? They’re not going to fire me, are they?” Yarrick had no clue what was going on, so he figured he might as well ask.
“Honestly, I have no idea. The head of HR didn’t say much. Just mentioned that she needs to speak with you about something. Don’t worry, Yarrick. If they were thinking about firing you, I’d be the first to object. And even if they were planning something like that, they’d have to go through me first.”
Ethan shook his head and patted Yarrick on the shoulder with a reassuring smile.
It seemed he was genuinely pleased with Yarrick’s work. Even though Yarrick had only been here a week, he had handled everything thrown his way with efficiency. “You’ve been a great help, Mr. Sutton. Truly.”
Ethan’s words eased some of the tension in Yarrick’s chest. If they were going to fire him, they would’ve spoken about it with Ethan first. Besides, if they were going to fire him, the head of HR herself wouldn’t need to personally speak to him.
The more Yarrick thought about it, the stranger it all seemed. If he had to guess, this wasn’t about firing him at all.
“Good. Just make sure you’re on time. Go see Ms. Chapman in HR at 6 pm,” Ethan informed him.
Whatever awaited him, he couldn’t escape his fate.
After listening to Ethan’s order, Yarrick quickly returned to his desk.
“Hey, what did Mr. Dawson want?” As soon as he sat down, Michael leaned over curiously. That must’ve been something important to tell Yarrick in private.
“He told me to head to HR this afternoon. Said someone wants to talk to me.”
“What? HR wants to talk to you?” Michael looked shocked. His first thought was that Yarrick was in trouble.
They had both just started working here a week ago. If HR was already coming for Yarrick, then he probably wasn’t safe either.
He had heard rumors about the company’s president being seriously ill. Was this the beginning of a wave of layoffs?
The thought alone made him uneasy.
“Yeah, that’s what he said. Mr. Dawson doesn’t think it’s about firing. He doesn’t even know what the meeting is about. But he seems pretty confident it’s not anything bad.”
“Hmm…”
