Chapter 49

Quinn cried, beating Cameron. "Why did you bring me to Moon Island? Why involve me in this? Did you know how scared I was? I can’t go to jail. My brother is still studying overseas, and my dad isn’t much help. I owe you so much money. What should I do?"

Cameron didn't try to move. He pulled her into an embrace, watching quietly as she vented her frustrations.

Quinn eventually tired, lying on his chest, crying. The frustrations of the past few days exploded simultaneously. She lay quietly in his embrace, eventually stopping. However, she suddenly realized she'd crossed a line and tried to leave.

She met Cameron's dark eyes, sensing his demeanor shift to cold. What had she done? She must have gone mad.

Quinn reached for her keys, about to enter her apartment, when Cameron pushed her against the wall, trapping her with his arms. "Who said you could just leave like that?"

Startled, Quinn lay flushed against the wall, fear in her eyes. She barely dared breathe; her heart pounded. Cameron's demeanor softened upon seeing her fear. He quipped, "Why don’t you say anything now?"

Quinn opened her mouth to apologize, but felt he was in the wrong. He'd put her in this situation and should apologize. Sure, she'd hit him, but not hard. Besides, he was a man; he shouldn't be so petty, right?

She pursed her lips, meeting his gaze stubbornly. "Then what do you want me to do? Do you want to hit me back?"

Cameron expected her to yield, not to talk back. His demeanor chilled again. He furrowed his brow, pushed his hips against the wall, and said nothing.

After a while, Cameron declared, "I don't hit women!" He moved away from the wall and started toward Quinn's apartment. "Hey!" Quinn yelled, following him.

She moved to stop him, accidentally bumping her head on his back. "Although I'll never lay hands on a woman, I won't let you talk back to me," Cameron said, displeased.

Quinn rubbed her head. "I didn't do that on purpose," she whispered.

Cameron eyed her and the small apartment. "This is your home?"

Quinn walked to the coffee table, poured herself water, and quickly drank it, trying to calm down. Wiping her mouth, she said, meeting Cameron's gaze and holding up her now-empty cup, "That's right."
