Chapter 67
“I know I shouldn’t involve your family, but since you’ve done this, I have no choice. By the way, I’ve heard you have a five-year-old illegitimate son. Where is he staying? Is it Flora Residences?” Although Harry smiled, every word he spoke felt like a suffocating weight on Jeremy.
Jeremy finally realized he’d met his match. He never expected the seemingly soft and gentle Cameron to be so ruthless and uncompromising.
Harry checked his wristwatch. “Oh, it’s getting late. Mr. Smith, what’s your decision? Are you letting them go, or do you want to drag your whole family down with you?”
Jeremy felt conflicted. His initial plan was to capture Quin and threaten Cameron with her, then secretly kill Cameron, halting the Ascend Group acquisition. He hadn’t anticipated Cameron’s intelligence or his awareness of the plot. Now, he was cornered.
“Mr. Sutton said that if you learned your mistake and made amends, he could ensure the Smith family wouldn’t be implicated. Don’t blame Mr. Sutton,” Harry continued. “The Sutton family has another heir, but that heir will certainly target the Smith family as soon as they take over.” Harry’s threat was delivered calmly.
Jeremy’s face flushed; sweat beaded on his forehead. The phone on the table rang. Jeremy looked shocked at the caller ID.
Harry noticed the change in Jeremy’s expression. “Mr. Smith, aren’t you answering the call?” he asked pointedly.
Jeremy answered with a trembling hand. “Hello, it’s me. Can we lay our hands on that guy?” It was Tristan.
“No. Leave him alone,” Jeremy said hastily.
“Hey, you’re the one who said this. But you still have to pay.”
“Okay, Hilary,” Jeremy replied, ending the call.
Harry waited, then flashed a pleased smile. “You’re a wise man, Mr. Smith. I’m glad you’ve made up your mind.”
“What will Mr. Sutton do to me?” Jeremy worried.
“That’s hard to say. You drugged Mr. Sutton. However, considering your father’s long friendship with Mr. Sutton Senior, Mr. Sutton planned to let things slide after acquiring Ascend Group at a reasonable price. But now you’ve gone this far, even plotting an abduction… If I were you, I would…” Harry offered a suggestion, “…go abroad immediately with my family, hide somewhere far away, and never return.”
“Go abroad? But my father’s condition… Besides, there are so many of us, and the Smith family business is based in Xenvale,” Jeremy protested, troubled. He hadn’t expected to be left with no choice after plotting for so long.
“Nothing matters more than lives, right?” Harry gave his final advice, rising to leave.
Jeremy sat pale and dazed, cold sweat soaking his back.
Meanwhile, Tristan ended his call in the warehouse and turned to Billy, shaking his head.
“What should we do now? We’ve done all this for nothing if we just let them go. What if the Smith guy refuses to pay? Should we abduct them and extort some money?” Billy asked.
