Chapter 73

Leaving the cafeteria with a heavy heart, I longed for Lila’s company more than ever. She was the only one who treated me the same, regardless of whether I was lovesick or not. My sister couldn't wait to finish work and share my day with Lila.

“Serena, Mr. Hastings is looking for you.”

My face paled as I looked toward Alex’s office. I felt both hesitant and eager, a strange dichotomy I couldn't explain. Dragging my feet, I took a deep breath before knocking. But before I could even lift my hand, the door swung open.

“Why are you standing at the door?” Alex’s brows furrowed at the sight of me. He turned and walked back into his office.

“Mr. Hastings,” I followed him inside, feeling uneasy and standing about three yards away. “Did you wish to see me?”

Alex sat down, facing his computer before looking up. His brows furrowed again. “Why are you standing so far away? Can I hear you from there?”

His chastising tone snapped me out of my discomfort. I almost retorted, “Are you deaf?” but held my tongue, remembering his authority and my lowly intern status.

“I’ve reviewed your academic background,” Alex continued crisply. “Starting now, you’ll be responsible for overseeing the office assistant duties, with Oliver assisting you.” Oliver Wood was Alex’s assistant; I’d met him a few times. He was always serious and stern, much like Alex himself.

“What do you mean?” I was unsure what he meant.

“It means you’ll serve as head office assistant, reporting directly to me,” Alex explained. “Oliver will help you initially, but afterward, you’ll handle all responsibilities independently.”

I stared at Alex in astonishment. “Mr. Hastings, this is absolutely out of the question. I’m a newcomer.”

“And people will think you got the job through connections?” Alex raised an eyebrow.

I remained silent, essentially admitting he was right.

“You’re my sister, Serena. Whether you admit it or not, you already have that reputation,” Alex swiveled his chair. “Since you have it, why not reap some benefits?”

After a moment, I worked up the courage to ask the questions that had been bothering me.

“I have two questions.”

“Before I answer, you must agree to my terms,” Alex replied immediately.

“You…” I took a step forward, but Alex remained unmoved.

“I can’t agree so quickly,” I confessed, biting my lip.

“Then I can’t answer your questions.”

I wanted to lash out, but looking at his handsome face, my anger dissipated.
