No Escape from Love Chapter 76

Listen to this chapter:

It seemed capitalists were always watching, silently noting who left work first. I grumbled, reaffirming my image of Alex as an evil capitalist. I hoped to suppress the burgeoning feelings I harbored for him.

I muttered to myself, "Alex is a ruthless capitalist. He'd never have emotions toward an intern. His only concern is maximizing my worth and then dismissing me without compensation. Then he'll simply hire another intern to exploit..."

"What are you mumbling about?" Alex's brows furrowed.

The words tumbled out, "I'm just thinking you're kind of a ruthless capitalist."

Alex's surprise was evident in his wide eyes. Realizing I'd spoken my thoughts aloud, I quickly averted my gaze.

Suddenly, I heard Alex's cold snort, filled with disdain and sarcasm. The underlying message was clear: Hastings Group was filled with talented individuals. Even if he exploited me, it wouldn't matter; I had no value to offer.

Knowing I was wrong, I pretended not to hear, turning away. In my heart, however, I vowed to one day surpass him.

As the Land Rover pulled up to the massive villa, I snapped back to reality. Mr. Hastings Senior and my mother awaited me at the entrance. "Mr. Hastings Senior, Mom," I greeted them politely.

Both greeted me enthusiastically. My mother took my hand, giving me a quick once-over. "Serena, how's work going?"

I nodded, discreetly glancing at Alex. "It's been going well."

Mr. Hastings Senior noticed my slight movement. "What's wrong? Did this boy bother you?"

"No, not at all," I denied emphatically. "Mr. Alex—has actually been quite nice to me."

"I've heard about the incident at the company," Mr. Hastings Senior gestured. "Given your position, Serena, you should receive special treatment. You shouldn't feel pressured."

"That's not necessary," my mother interjected quickly. "Serena, I'm happy you're working at Hastings Group. But please don't cause any problems or spread rumors about Alex at the company."

In reality, Alex should avoid causing issues or gossip about me. However, I couldn't look at him. I kept my eyes lowered, maintaining a calm demeanor.

"Come, let's start dinner," Mr. Hastings Senior beamed. "Nicole has prepared a feast tonight. She made all your favorite dishes."

True to his word, the table held half my favorite foods and half Alex's. Alex, even as an adult, retained a sweet tooth, preferring honey-mustard glazed ribs and honey-glazed chicken fillets. I enjoyed diverse meat and vegetable combinations, and various soups.

Throughout the meal, I couldn't help but sneak glances at my mother. Her smile never faded, widening when she noticed me watching her. Mr. Hastings Senior would often serve her her favorite dishes.
