Listen to this chapter:

Noelle’s eyes flashed. “We did nothing wrong! Why apologize?”

Xenia smirked. “Noelle, sweetheart, you’re naive. Even if Justin started it, the Parhams will ruin your boyfriend’s career. That’s how they operate.”

Alfred exploded. “You little bitch! The Parhams aren’t as bad as you claim. Do you even know them?”

Xenia laughed, a superior sound. “Oh, I know them. The powerful crush the weak. It’s that simple.” She practically vibrated with self-importance.

Alfred was speechless. Watching her go, he muttered to Noelle, “Does your family always talk like that?”

“Xenia’s usually sweet,” Noelle said, “but since she’s with Justin… well, there you have it.” She looked worried at Cedric. “I’ll hire a lawyer. You’re not apologizing.”

Cedric’s expression softened. “It’s minor, Noelle.”

Alfred added, “Don’t worry, Nelly. I’m here. That kid won’t dare.”

Noelle’s face fell. “It’s my fault. If it weren’t for me…”

Cedric gently tapped her forehead. “That sounded like Xenia’s ‘little bitch’ speech. I won’t let you get away with it.”

“But Justin was after me, not you,” Noelle protested.

Cedric’s gaze was intense. He’d seen her shove him aside to take the blow. “Your small frame couldn’t handle that. Don’t be brave next time.”

Alfred chimed in, “Yeah, Nelly, let Cedric take the hit. He can handle it, you can’t.”

Noelle hung her head, the awkwardness of her failed confession resurfacing.

They left the bar. Back at the apartment, Cedric said quietly, “Don’t overthink it.”

Noelle nodded and went inside. Cedric and Alfred followed, their conversation immediately changing tone.

“What’s wrong with your family?” Cedric asked, his voice cold.

Alfred swore. “Shit, I should have slapped Justin myself! I’ll teach him respect.”

Cedric’s eyes hardened. He’d seen how shaken Noelle was. “And tomorrow, you’ll teach your cousin some manners at the hospital.”

Alfred nodded grimly. “Got it.”

Back in her room, Noelle felt a knot of anxiety. This wouldn’t end easily. She couldn’t let Cedric face the Parhams because of her.

Her phone rang. It was Frank. After a pause, she answered. “Hello, Frank.”

“Nelly, I know about Justin. It’s messy, but Lucas and I will handle it. Stay out of it. Move back home. Distance yourself from that doctor.”
