Chapter 125
I softened my tone deliberately. I never enjoyed playing the victim, but if it could finally secure Jonathan's agreement to a divorce, I was willing to try. He stood with his back to me the entire time, never once turning around. It wasn't until the silence swallowed my last word that he finally said, in a low voice, “I’m not getting a divorce.” And with that, he walked out, leaving me alone.
I stared at the closed door, feeling a surge of frustration I couldn't contain. I grabbed a pillow and hurled it at the door. The next few days felt like a return to the old routine. Jonathan no longer permitted me to go out.
His attitude wasn't as cold or domineering as before. He agreed to almost everything I asked, except for leaving the house. In that respect, he remained inflexible, which only fueled my resentment.
“Jonathan, I’m begging you,” I pleaded. “Please, just let me go. Can’t we just get divorced? I don’t want your guilt, and I don’t need your compensation!”
Initially, I tried to speak calmly, but Jonathan simply stared at me with those same deep, icy eyes, remaining silent. Only after a long silence would he sigh and softly say, “I’m not divorcing you.”
Over time, frustration and anger consumed me. I began yelling at him. “Why won’t you divorce me, Jonathan? What do you want from me? Are you trying to drive me to my death? Is that what it takes for you to be with Alicia and have everyone's approval?”
I hurled every cruel remark I could conjure, but he never reacted. He tolerated everything. No matter how harsh or vitriolic my words, he remained unmoved. Sometimes, when I closed my eyes and refused to speak, he would gently brush my hair from my face and kiss my forehead.
“You’ll see soon enough,” he whispered once, “I’ve never had any romantic feelings for her.” I closed my eyes, pretending not to hear. He could say it a hundred times, but his words would never outweigh his actions. Maybe he truly believed he lacked feelings for Alicia and that they were merely like family, but I saw the truth clearly.

If he didn’t have feelings for her, then why did he always treat her so specially? Everyone knew I barely mattered to him. Alicia Zimmer, the cherished daughter of the Zimmer family and his childhood friend, was the one he truly cared about. People don't fabricate such things, so I wouldn't be swayed by empty promises.
A few more days passed, and one morning, Jonathan finally said I could go out. I should have known there was a catch. He wanted me to accompany him to Alicia's birthday party.
“I’m not going,” I said flatly. I went straight to the bed, sat down, and leaned against the headboard, turning my back to him. I didn't even want to see his face.
“If you don’t want me to cause a scene at her party, then don’t bring me.” I heard Jonathan's heavy footsteps approach. After a moment, he gently said, “You’ve always complained that I never take you to public events, haven’t you?”
I rolled my eyes. “We’ve been married for five years, and it never occurred to you to show me off. Now that we’re getting a divorce, what’s the point? Just get it over with.”
I scoffed. “No one in your social circle even knows I’m your wife. Once we split, it won’t affect my reputation at all. We don’t have kids. I’m not after your money. A clean break would be better for both of us.”
“What do you mean by ‘better for both of us’?” Jonathan asked, his voice laced with a threat.
