Chapter 179

The atmosphere grew heavy, cold, and unfeeling. Jonathan tilted his head up slightly to look at Frederick and me. Even though he stood below us, he still had an air of superiority about him. A cold glint flashed as tension crept into the space. I instinctively straightened my posture. His oppressive stare made me uncomfortable. I turned around and said to Frederick, “I’m heading inside.”

Frederick nodded, subconsciously glancing downward. Without saying another word, he followed me inside. Then, he closed the balcony door behind us, cutting off any potential view from the outside.

Soon, it was time to get off work. Employees packed up and began to leave. I had just finished wrapping things up when Frederick approached me. “Want a ride?” I shook my head and said, “Did you forget? I live here now.” Frederick blinked in realization. “Sorry, it slipped my mind for a second,” he said. “It’s okay.” I smiled at him. “If you’ve got something going on, you can go on ahead.” He didn’t respond, but his eyes drifted instinctively toward the door.

I understood what he meant and said to him, “It’s fine. Jonathan isn’t going to come inside. “How do you know?” I wasn’t sure why, but I had a hunch that was the case. “He’s been downstairs quite a bit these days, but he has never come up here. I don’t think he wants a confrontation with me.” After all, he should know by now that I truly want a divorce. But I had no idea what was going through his mind. He refused to let go. I figured he simply didn’t want to face the issue head-on.

Frederick didn’t say anything in response. “I’m heading out. Call me if anything happens.” “I will.” But deep down, I knew that even if something happened, it would already be too late to reach him. I had to learn to face things on my own.

Frederick’s parents weren’t wrong. After all, I was still married. I shouldn’t have involved him in this mess. I said to him, “As your partner, I should at least be capable of handling things.” He chuckled but didn’t say much more. After a few parting reminders, I saw him out.

Outside, the wind howled, accompanied by a torrential downpour. I set up the portable bed in the office and lay down to rest for a while. My eyes felt heavy. I took off my glasses and massaged the space between my brows. After lying down for a while, I sat back up and switched on the computer to continue working. I had never been one to advocate overtime, which was why I allowed everyone to leave on time. But there were still a lot of minor loose ends to tie up.

I majored in computer science back in my college years. It wasn’t because I liked it in particular. It was simply a lucrative field. I was also a quick learner. Having grown up with several older sisters and a younger brother, nothing surprised me anymore. Families like mine weren’t even rare. What would become of my sisters, aside from the few opportunities that education might offer, was a foregone conclusion. Frankly speaking, I couldn’t help but wonder how I ended up marrying Jonathan in the first place. My family was no different from leeches. How did they pass up the chance to bleed me dry? I haven’t heard from my family since I woke up with amnesia. That wasn’t normal. Did Jonathan warn them off?
