Chapter 188

I tossed and turned on the narrow cot, unable to sleep. After a while, frustration got the better of me, and I stormed out to find them, only to see Jonathan calmly directing the team, focused on work.

When he noticed me approaching, he merely lifted his eyes. “You came?”

I clenched my teeth and marched up to him. “Jonathan, do you have any idea what time it is?”

I jabbed a finger at my watch. “It’s 10:00 pm. Do you have any idea how disruptive this is?”

“This is an office building, not a residential zone. There’s no such thing as disturbing the peace here,” he said, voice flat.

His tone was maddeningly calm, especially in contrast to how hysterical I felt.

I inhaled sharply. “You know I’m staying here. You’re deliberately messing with my sleep.”

“Then go home.” He passed a file to a nearby employee without even looking at me.

The others, longtime employees of Millenia, glanced in my direction and quickly bowed their heads before backing away.

I stayed where I was, standing directly in front of him. We stared at each other in silence, the tension thick in the air.

And suddenly, a wave of helplessness washed over me. No matter what I did, I felt like nothing more than a pathetic clown in his eyes. All he had to do was lift his hand, and I would be right in the center of his palm, unable to escape.

“Jonathan, what exactly do you want from me?”

I hadn’t been sleeping well lately. The dark circles under my eyes made that clear.

He reached up and brushed his fingers beneath one of them.

I immediately jerked away and stepped aside.

He pulled his hand back slowly, his gaze clouded with something unreadable. “Like I said. If you’re tired, go back.”

I gritted my teeth. “I’m not going back. Even if I drop dead from exhaustion right here, I won’t set foot in the Ford residence again.”

Jonathan looked at me coolly. “Is that so? If not the Ford residence, then Willowcreek. Either way, there are plenty of places for you to go.”

“Are you not listening to me? I don’t want to go anywhere that you’ve arranged for me.”

“I can stop arranging things. Find your own place if that makes you feel better.”

He motioned for someone to bring over a set of keys. “Villa, full-floor apartment, whatever you want. It’s yours.”

I drew a sharp breath. “Are you deaf or just pretending not to hear? I don’t want to live with you. I’d rather sleep on this tiny bed than have to look at your insufferable face every day.”

I glared at him, but after a moment, I faltered and looked away.

Truthfully, it was hard to say cruel things when he looked like that.

Still, I steadied myself and said coldly, “If you want to drag this out, then fine. Let’s drag it out. Let’s see who breaks first.”

With that, I turned and headed back to my office.

There was only a glass wall between us. Even from my cot, I could still see across to his side.

I wrapped myself tightly in the blanket, turned my back to him, and shut my eyes.

Maybe my little outburst had worked. They didn’t stay to work overtime.

I heard the lights click off one after another. Just as sleep was about to take me, a sudden warmth brushed against my back.

“Who is it?” I turned instinctively, only for Jonathan to press a hand to my shoulder and pull me into his arms.

“Sleep,” he murmured behind my ear, his breath low and warm against my skin. The way his breath brushed along my neck sent a shiver straight through me.
