Chapter 204
Jonathan frowned and cut me off. “I never said that. I just thought you were the jealous type. That’s all. I never had any other feelings for her.”
I shook his hand off. “Oh really?”
“That day by the pool, Alicia was the one who pushed me in. She told me to watch closely and see who you’d save. And just like she said, you saved her. Do you really think I’ll buy your excuses after that?”
Jonathan’s face darkened, caught between disbelief and anger. “Why didn’t you ever tell me that?”
I gave him an impatient look. “Why should I tell you?”
Jonathan took a deep breath, like he was holding something back.
After a long pause, he finally said in a hoarse voice, “Elise, I know you lost your memory. That’s why you don’t believe me. But once it comes back, you won’t need me to explain any of this.”
I scoffed and didn’t even bother to respond.
He stayed silent for a while, watching me. “You really don’t remember anything at all?”
I had lost my memory for so long, but he hadn’t noticed a thing. He must have found that strange.
I let out a cold laugh. “I didn’t lose my memory, Jonathan. I remember everything. I just still find you disgusting, and I still want a divorce. Is that clear enough for you?”
Jonathan’s lips pressed into a tight line. His face went blank for a second.
After a moment, he finally said, “Let’s finish the checkup first. If the doctor says you’re fine, I’ll take you home.”
“I’m moving out,” I said without hesitation.
I thought Jonathan would refuse, but to my surprise, he nodded right away. “Alright. I’ll take care of it.”
“I don’t want to live with you. And don’t put me in places like Willowcreek again. I’ll find a place on my own,” I said.
Jonathan’s voice was low. “Whatever you say.”
Only then did I stand up. “Let’s get the checkup over with. I want to leave the hospital as soon as I can.”
I really had lost my memory.
Once Jonathan found out, the divorce came to a sudden halt. Now that he knew, he had even more reason not to let me go.
“It’s not that you don’t love me anymore. You just can’t remember.”
Chapter 204 (2/2)
Those were his exact words.
“Elise, once you remember, you won’t want the divorce.”
His words make my skin crawl. And deep down, I feared that if I did remember, I’d become that same pitiful 25-year-old Elise all over again.
That version of me was truly pathetic, so I’d rather never remember anything at all.
Jonathan, thankfully, didn’t push me anymore. I rented a place near New Voyage, and he didn’t follow me there.
One evening, after getting back from New Voyage, I unlocked the door and stepped inside. Just as I was about to toss my bag onto the couch, I noticed a shadowy figure sitting in the dark.
He looked up at me and called my name. “Elise.”
I nearly jumped. “When did you get here? No–how do you even have a key to this place?”
“I spoke to the landlord,” Jonathan answered.
I pressed my lips together. “Give me the key. I’ll change the lock tomorrow.”
He didn’t say a word at first, just stared at me with an unreadable look in his eyes. “There’s one thing I need to know. How much did you forget?”
I only told him I forgot everything about him, starting from the moment I woke up after my suicide attempt. I didn’t say whether I remembered him from before that–back in our school days.
There was no way I’d let him find out I once had a crush on him. That would only make the divorce harder.
Regret started creeping in about telling him I lost my memory. I began contradicting myself, like a child throwing a tantrum.
“I didn’t forget anything!” I snapped. “I want this divorce because I don’t love you anymore. How many times do I have to say it?”
