Chapter 207

Jonathan replied coldly, “I’ve done everything I was supposed to. I don’t owe you anything. I only looked after you out of respect for your grandfather, but that doesn’t mean you get to keep pushing your luck.”

“I’m pushing my luck now?”

Alicia’s face darkened. She couldn’t think of a comeback, so she clenched her fists and threw me a hateful glare before walking away.

It wasn’t until after she left that I finally understood why she had been so desperate to confront me today. It turned out Jonathan had gone public about what really happened at the pool that day.

He said there was never a choice between me and Alicia. He would only ever choose me, and he only pulled Alicia out because he didn’t know I had fallen into the water too.

If he had known I was there, there wouldn’t have been any decision to make. He never would’ve hesitated. He’d have chosen me without question.

What he said was blunt and undeniable. He completely dismissed the idea that Alicia had ever truly mattered to him, especially not more than I did.

Because of that incident, I became a joke in our social circle. People said that even my own husband didn’t care about my life. They were all just waiting to see when he would finally cast me aside.

None of them expected a reversal like this.

Those people only cared about where Jonathan stood. And now that he had spoken, it was clear that he was backing me in front of everyone and putting Alicia in her place.

No wonder Alicia lost her composure and came rushing to confront me. It wasn’t just her interests that were damaged. Even the perfect image she had worked so hard to maintain had completely fallen apart.

But there was still one thing I couldn’t understand. If Jonathan truly never had feelings for her, then why did I spend all those years seeing Alicia as a threat?

More fragmented memories flashed through my mind. A dull ache throbbed in my head, and I instinctively shook it off.

A flicker of concern crossed Jonathan’s eyes after he noticed. He immediately reached out to steady me. “Are you feeling unwell? Let me take you to the hospital.”

“I’m not going.”

I shook his hand off. “Just make sure Alicia doesn’t come bothering me again. That’s all I ask. Everything else is none of your business.”

“Don’t worry. I won’t give her another chance.”

Jonathan said in a low voice, “I won’t make that kind of mistake again.”

Frederick was still standing off to the side when he suddenly said, “You can choose not to make the same mistake again, but not every mistake can be forgiven.”

I thought what he said was absolutely right. I couldn’t agree more.

Jonathan shot him a cold look. “The Brindlewest project was already given to you as thanks for saving her. Don’t ask for more than you’ve been given.”

Frederick let out a laugh. “At the end of the day, I’m the one who saved her. She can’t even swim. If I hadn’t jumped in that day, you’d be a widower by now. And this is how you talk to the man who saved your wife?”

Jonathan’s eyes sharpened. “How do you know she can’t swim?”

Frederick’s expression showed a rare hint of mischief. “What do you think?”

He let out a sigh. “Since you two are getting divorced, I might as well come clean. I’ve known her for a long time. I confessed to her back then, but she ended up falling for you instead…”

He clicked his tongue and looked at me. “Elise, if you think you were blind back then and picked the wrong guy, I’m still willing to give you a second chance.”

Almost the very next second, Jonathan punched him straight in the face, and the two of them broke into a heated fight.
