Even if she and Matteo weren't officially divorced, or even if they were, given the friendship between the two old ladies, she would still have to invite the Wilson family. Whether the Wilsons came was their prerogative.
That evening, Freya had initially planned to return home, but changed her mind, turning the car around and heading back to Matteo's villa. Upon arrival, she found neither Matteo nor Isabella there. Old Lady Wilson had gone to the old residence a couple of days earlier on some business.
Freya dropped her bag and went to the bathroom. Half an hour later, as she finished showering, she heard a car in the driveway. Matteo and Isabella had returned. Freya calmly dried her hair, reflecting on their arrival.
Isabella, seeing Freya, rushed upstairs and embraced her. "Mom, we're back!" she exclaimed. Freya smelled Raven's perfume on her. Remaining calm, Freya turned off the blow dryer and gently patted Isabella's face. "Have you showered yet?"
Isabella shook her head. "Not yet."
"It's past ten. Go to your room and shower. You have school tomorrow."
As Freya finished speaking, Matteo entered. Their eyes met briefly before Freya coldly looked away. Isabella tugged at her. "Mom, can you help me shower?"
"Okay, let me dry my hair first," Freya replied.
"Okay!" Isabella happily ran to get her pajamas.
Matteo watched her go, then sat down. "When did you get back?" he asked.
"Not long ago," Freya replied, continuing to dry her hair without looking at him. Matteo didn't press further, rising to prepare for his own shower.
Freya suddenly remembered something. Turning off the blow dryer, she took an invitation from her bag before he entered the bathroom and handed it to him. "Grandma's birthday is coming up. This is the invitation for the Wilson family."
Getting closer, she noticed his clothes still carried Raven's perfume. She subtly pinched her nose, then quickly stepped back. Matteo seemed oblivious, casually opening the invitation. "Seventy years old?"
"Yes," Freya nodded. Unlike in the past, she didn't ask if he'd be free or plead for his attendance. She simply said, "Please let my parents know."
It was unclear if Matteo noticed her change in approach. He looked at her, then casually set the invitation aside. "Got it." He turned and entered the bathroom.
Freya watched him go, put away the blow dryer, and went to help Isabella with her shower. After helping Isabella shower, dry her hair, and prepare for bed, almost an hour had passed. Isabella cuddled close. "Can I sleep with you tonight?"
Given her current situation with Matteo, Freya simply returned to the master bedroom, gathered her things, and said as she left, "I'm going to sleep in Isabella's room."
Matteo, reading a book, merely murmured, "Hmm," offering no objection.
The next day, after breakfast, Freya sent Isabella to school and returned to the company. The old lady's birthday was approaching, but she hadn't had time to buy a gift. At lunch, she called Jessica, asking her to go shopping with her that evening. Jessica readily agreed upon hearing it was for her grandmother.
Freya still hadn't contacted Maria Wilson. After hanging up with Jessica, she called Maria. The call went through, but Maria didn't answer. Freya knew Maria disliked her and the entire Miller family; this unanswered call felt deliberate. Still, considering the birthday, Freya felt compelled to try again.
The call was ended, and Freya dialed again. This time, the call was immediately disconnected. Freya understood Maria was deliberately avoiding her, but she didn't care; she was simply going through the motions. She sent Maria a text explaining the call, asking when she might be available to receive the invitation. Without waiting for a reply, Freya resumed her work.
That evening, after dinner with Jessica, their extensive shopping yielded nothing suitable. Jessica then suggested, "There's a charity auction in two nights. Why not check it out then?"
