Chapter 247
Freya and Matteo’s marriage had been something Grandfather Yves had observed for the first few years. He’d never liked Freya from the beginning. Now, he had someone else he preferred. He maintained good relationships with Wilson’s matriarch, Grandfather Yves, and other elders, but he was never one to be influenced by them. So, no matter how much Grandfather Yves or the matriarch disapproved of Matteo’s relationship with Raven, they couldn’t do much about it, nor could they persuade him. Even if Grandfather Yves was angry, all he could do was stew in his own frustration.
Thinking of this, Grandfather Yves lightly patted Freya’s hand. “These years… sigh.” Freya understood that he was expressing his sympathy for her. She smiled and said, “I’ve let go of it all. I’ve started my new life, and I’m doing well. Grandfather Yves, you don’t need to worry about me.” Grandfather Yves smiled back. “That’s good.”
After dinner, when Freya was sending Grandfather Yves back to the Yves family’s old residence, Matteo and Raven had already left. Perhaps Matteo hadn’t bothered to check on Isabella after leaving the Yves family’s old residence, because just as Freya was about to leave, Isabella called her. Freya glanced at the phone but didn’t answer.
Later that evening, when Freya went back to the Miller family’s house for dinner, she found an invitation card on the coffee table. Opening it, she saw that it was an invitation to the matriarch of the Wilson family’s seventy-fifth birthday party. There was still some time before the matriarch’s birthday arrived, but there had been a fortune teller who said that the matriarch should not host a grand birthday celebration for the past ten years, or it would bring a fatal calamity. The matriarch believed this, so for the past ten years, her birthdays had been simple family affairs with no grand celebrations.
Now, the ten-year period was over, and Felix and Matteo had already discussed that this year, they would throw a grand birthday party for the matriarch. Perhaps because of this, even though the birthday party was still some time away, they had already finalized the details. Miller’s grandmother came out of the room and saw the invitation card in Freya’s hand. She said, “It was just delivered.” Freya replied with a simple “Mm.” Mrs. Miller added, “This is the first time she’s hosting a big birthday celebration in ten years. Logically, we should attend, but…” But considering the situation between Freya and Matteo, it really didn’t seem appropriate for them to attend. Freya understood her grandmother’s feelings. She felt the same way. Besides, since Matteo had already brought Raven to the old residence, there was a chance he would bring Raven along to the birthday celebration.
After dinner at the Miller family’s house, Freya returned to her own place. On Monday morning, she went to work at Cole as usual. Time flew by while she was working, and before she knew it, it was Thursday afternoon. While she was in a meeting, Isabella called again. Freya saw the incoming call and, without thinking, immediately hung up. Just after hanging up, Isabella called again. Freya frowned but still didn’t pick up. This time, Isabella didn’t call again. Freya resumed her meeting. A few minutes later, her phone rang again. This time, it was Matteo. Freya pursed her lips and turned off her phone.
It wasn’t until an hour later, when the meeting was over, that she turned her phone back on. As soon as she opened it, she saw a message from Matteo: [Isabella fell down the stairs at school and was sent to the hospital.] Freya froze for a moment, her mind going blank. She grabbed her phone and bag and rushed out of the company, heading straight to the hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital, she called Matteo to ask where he was. Matteo quickly answered and gave her the specific room number. When Freya reached the VIP floor, she immediately pushed the door open. As soon as she entered, she saw Matteo sitting in the room and Isabella lying on the bed. Isabella’s face was pale, with bandages wrapped around her head. She looked up at Freya with a weak smile, “Mom…”
Freya quickly asked, “What happened? What did the doctor say?” “The doctor said it’s a concussion, but it’s not too severe,” Matteo answered. Freya sighed in relief. “That’s good.”
At that moment, Matteo asked, “Have you eaten?” Freya had been in meetings all day, and now it was already past seven, so she hadn’t eaten anything. She shook her head. He didn’t say anything but took out his phone and ordered a meal to be delivered. It had been more than half a month since Isabella had seen Freya, and now she was listless, with little energy. She lay quietly in Freya’s arms, not saying anything. Freya gently embraced her and asked, “If you’re not feeling well, want to sleep for a while?” Isabella murmured, “Mm…” She held Freya’s hand, closed her eyes, and lay down, but her brows remained furrowed. It wasn’t until half an hour later that she fell asleep.
At that point, the food that Matteo ordered arrived. He looked at Freya and said, “Eat something first.” Freya didn’t accept. “I’ll order my own food.” Matteo glanced at her but didn’t insist. Freya took out her phone and ordered another meal. While Isabella slept, Freya quietly sat by her side. Matteo seemed to have something to attend to. He stepped outside to make a call and didn’t return until a long time later. He sat down across from Freya. It seemed like he wanted to talk to her, and when she noticed, she lowered her head and focused on her phone. She clearly didn’t want to talk to him, so Matteo smiled and didn’t say anything. They each quietly went about their own business in the room.
As the night deepened and Isabella didn’t wake up, Matteo finally spoke again. “I’ll stay here tonight. You go home and get some rest.” Freya turned to look at Isabella but didn’t speak or leave. Matteo continued, “Even if you’re angry, you should answer her calls more frequently from now on, even if not every single one. Don’t let it happen that she’s in danger and you didn’t pick up her call in time. You might regret it for the rest of your life.” Freya froze. He knew she often deliberately ignored Isabella’s calls.
