Stella had just asked about the relationship between Matteo and Freya. As a result, Yancy learned that Matteo and Freya were still in the process of their divorce and had not officially separated yet. Considering how close Freya was with her grandmother, and that she and Matteo hadn’t yet divorced, it made sense for her to attend her grandmother’s birthday banquet.
But… looking at Old Mrs. Wilson’s back, Yancy couldn’t help but ask, “Matteo, will Sister-in-law come to the birthday banquet?” Isabella had finished eating and wasn’t in the dining room anymore. Matteo continued eating slowly, and when he heard the question, he answered, “You can ask Grandma later.”
Yancy paused. In other words, he didn’t know either? Or was Freya’s phone call to Grandma specifically about this matter? If Freya was coming to the birthday banquet, there would be no need for her to call and clarify it.
So… Yancy liked Freya a lot. He looked at Matteo and really wanted to ask him if he was sure about divorcing Freya. But the family—Grandma, Father, and Mother—had no say in Matteo’s matters.
He couldn’t ask too much. After Old Mrs. Wilson finished her call, she kindly asked, “Grandma, what did Sister-in-law say?” Old Mrs. Wilson glanced at Matteo, who was still eating gracefully. Upon hearing Freya’s name, she didn’t show much reaction but replied, “Your sister-in-law called to apologize, saying she wouldn’t be able to attend my birthday celebration in person.”
Seeing that Old Mrs. Wilson had dropped a hint, Matteo didn’t respond. He just quietly added more food to her plate. Old Mrs. Wilson pushed her bowl away, causing Matteo’s fork to miss.
The day of Old Mrs. Wilson’s birthday soon arrived. Because Matteo had reminded her, Isabella had prepared a birthday gift for Old Mrs. Wilson in advance. When she went downstairs for breakfast, she was the first to give the gift to Old Mrs. Wilson. Old Mrs. Wilson smiled and said, “Thank you, Isabella.”
Matteo also handed his gift to the old lady: “This is the gift Freya and I prepared for you. Happy birthday.” Old Mrs. Wilson glanced at him but didn’t speak. Before she could say anything, the housekeeper came in holding two gift boxes from outside and said to Old Mrs. Wilson, “Madam, this is a congratulatory gift sent by Mrs. Miller and Young Mrs. Green, said to be for you.”
Old Mrs. Wilson took the gifts and looked at Matteo. Although she knew Matteo was trying to please her by saying the gift was from both him and Freya, she no longer forced anything between them. She snorted, “Freya prepared a gift just for me. No need for you to go through the trouble.” She then ignored him.
Matteo smiled but didn’t take it to heart. He turned to Isabella and urged her to eat her breakfast quickly, as he was going to take her to school soon. After the gifts were handed over, Freya grabbed the car keys and went to the office. Not long after she arrived, she and Johnny went to Wilson Tech. When they arrived, they saw Raven.
Upon seeing them, Raven only greeted Johnny, saying, “Mr. Gray.” Raven greeted Johnny with a smile; her mood seemed quite good. There was not a trace of sadness about not attending Old Mrs. Wilson’s birthday party. Johnny saw this and curled his lips, ignoring her as he got back to work with Freya.
That evening, he went back to his family’s house, and along with his parents, he went to the restaurant where Old Mrs. Wilson’s birthday party was being held. They arrived relatively early, and when they entered the banquet hall, there weren’t too many guests yet. Today was Old Mrs. Wilson’s milestone birthday, and the Wilson family had taken it very seriously. The hall was filled with Wilson family members, including Isabella.
Johnny hadn’t seen Isabella in over two years. The last time he saw her, he thought she resembled Matteo, but now, after these years, she looked even more like him. As the Gray family arrived, the Wilson family members greeted them politely. After some brief pleasantries, Johnny’s mother’s eyes landed on Isabella.
Johnny and Freya had known each other ever since Freya became a student at Nolan, and Johnny’s mother had always liked her. She thought Freya, being close in age to her son and so accomplished, would be a great match for him. However, she had merely hinted at this, and Johnny had told her that Freya already had someone she liked, and before she had even processed it, they had gotten married.
Johnny’s mother was aware of the situation between Freya and Matteo. So, when she saw Isabella, she smiled and said, “This is my great-granddaughter, Isabella.” Johnny’s mother smiled and rubbed Isabella’s head, saying, “She’s really cute.”
Isabella obediently called out, “Grandma Gray,” and then, when she looked at Johnny, she couldn’t help but stare at him for a few more seconds. Old Mrs. Wilson laughed and said, “Isabella, why are you staring at Uncle Gray like that?” Isabella replied, “Uncle Gray’s face… looks so familiar.”
Johnny: Before he could say anything, Isabella looked at him again and said, “I think I’ve also heard Uncle Gray’s voice somewhere…”
