Chapter 78
Hearing her mom ask if she had eaten, Freya felt relieved; it didn't seem like her mom was angry about her sneaking away that day. She knew her mom would never be truly mad at her. However, she'd noticed a change in their daily interactions over the past few days. Her mom hadn't been calling every day, nor constantly asking about her whereabouts. Freya considered this a positive change; she liked it. She hadn't even inquired about Freya's activities from the previous two days, a lack of interest Freya welcomed.
After discussing her studies with Isabella, Freya hung up the phone. Back at the office, Johnny approached, asking, “The tech exhibition is tomorrow. Should we all meet at the company and go together?” Freya replied, “Sounds good.”
The next morning, Freya's car unexpectedly broke down shortly after she'd started driving. The car behind her collided with hers, initiating a chain reaction. Angry drivers behind them began shouting. Her car, immobile, blocked traffic. Freya apologized to the other drivers and immediately called for emergency assistance, awaiting the rescue team. This, however, was consuming considerable time, and she was eager to attend the exhibition.
At that moment, a tall figure approached from the opposite sidewalk. Freya looked up; it was Harry. What was he doing here? She gave a faint “Mm,” unwilling to engage. She quickly called Johnny, informing him of her situation and instructing them to proceed without her; she would catch up once the situation resolved. "Dealing with traffic accidents is troublesome," she added. By the time she finished, the exhibition would likely be over.
Johnny replied, “Wait a moment, I’ll have someone contact you, but it’ll probably take half an hour before they arrive.”
“It’s fine. I can go later.” As long as she didn't miss the exhibition, that was sufficient.
After hanging up, Freya was about to speak to the other drivers when Harry interjected, “I’ll have someone handle this for you. Where are you going? I’ll take you.”
Freya was surprised and looked up at him. Five minutes later, she was sitting in Harry's car. They sat in the backseat with some distance between them, but Freya still felt awkward.
“Thank you.”
“It’s nothing,” Harry replied.
Nothing? Freya frowned. In the past, Harry had largely ignored her. Their previous encounter at the racetrack hadn't been pleasant either. Although Harry had unexpectedly greeted her the last time they'd met, he was now busy, making several calls after getting into the car. Freya was relieved; they weren't close, and being in such close proximity made her uncomfortable.
Forty minutes later, they arrived at the tech exhibition. Freya got out and politely said to Harry, “Thank you.” Harry nodded, and after a brief nod in return, she turned to leave.
Just as Freya walked a short distance, a black luxury sedan parked beside Harry's car. Raven initially thought she'd seen incorrectly, but after checking the license plate, she confirmed her observation. She knocked on Harry's car window. The window slowly rolled down, and Raven leaned over to look inside.
“Harry, it’s really you.” Then she asked, “What brings you here?”
Harry got out of the car. “I was dropping a friend off.” At that moment, Logan and Lauren also exited the car. Upon learning Harry's identity, they quickly greeted him. Harry nodded back. “Uncle, Aunt.” After brief pleasantries, Harry received a call. Since the exhibition was about to begin, Raven and her family soon departed.
Meanwhile, Freya met up with Johnny and the others at the exhibition entrance. Johnny leaned over and whispered, “The professor will also be attending the exhibition.”
Freya froze, her eyes widening in shock. Johnny raised an eyebrow and smiled. “It’s a good thing you found someone to help you. If the professor knew you were late, he’d probably…”
Freya immediately understood. Their professor wouldn't care about the reason for lateness; to him, it signified a lack of seriousness. He had been furious when she graduated, married, and had a child. If they met now, and he discovered her tardiness, Freya couldn't imagine his reaction. The thought made her shiver.
“So, it’s good that you weren’t late,” Johnny said with a grin. Freya let out a sigh of relief.
