Chapter 235
"Isn't that the gift we gave Filip and Cynthia long ago?" Selena remembered.
Selena also recalled that the Yates family had given the Jones family a valuable set of jewelry, which she still kept in her safe.
"Do you know the story behind this pendant?" Justin asked.
Selena pondered. "You mentioned it before. On the day Cynthia was born, someone gave her this pendant. Who was it again?"
"Sam Xenos," Justin replied.
Selena was confused. "Who is he?"
"You're really out of the loop. Don't you know Sam Xenos? The Xenos family is one of the four prominent families in Betrico, once as powerful as the Bennetts," Justin said.
Selena thought for a second. Almost everyone knew the four major families in Betrico: the Bennetts, the Sullivans, the Sextons, and the Xenos family. These four families nearly monopolized the city's economic development.
However, Betrico was far from Roncrity. If it weren't for Jonathan, they probably wouldn't have crossed paths with the city's elite.
Selena was surprised. "How are you connected to the Xenos family? Why would they give Cynthia something so precious?"
Justin explained, "Sam's parents and wife (a former local TV reporter) are from Roncrity. On the day Cynthia was born, his wife was also giving birth at Harmonious Maternity Hospital. Do you remember the chaos?"
Selena remembered every detail. A pregnant woman experienced severe complications and heavy bleeding. All the doctors and nurses rushed to help. The hospital was in disarray, with all staff members rushing to assist. Although the woman survived, she gave birth to a stillborn baby.
Later, a nurse mentioned the infant was born healthy and taken to the nursery, but it was found dead later due to the chaos. Many people were involved. Shortly after, the hospital was shut down. The Xenos family's involvement remained unclear.
The Xenos family, once powerful and surpassing the Sextons and Sullivans, had been evenly matched with the Bennetts for years. However, after that year, they gradually disappeared. Sam and his wife moved abroad, shifting their business operations overseas, although some sons remained in the country.
Justin had recently thought of Sam due to some big news: Sam was returning home this month to pay respects to his ancestors.
"Back then, Mrs. Xenos barely survived and gave birth to a stillborn child," Selena said. "Perhaps their heartbreak led them to move abroad. I wonder why Cynthia is involved and why Mr. Xenos gave her such an expensive pendant."
Justin said, "That pendant was meant for his daughter. Her death overwhelmed him. When we left the hospital, he was in the hallway, staring at the pendant and crying. Then, Cynthia's cries caught his attention.
"It's strange, but Cynthia seemed connected to him. She cried uncontrollably. Mr. Xenos held her, and she immediately stopped crying and even smiled at him."
Justin's gaze drifted as he recalled, "Mr. Xenos was probably reminded of his daughter. Holding Cynthia must have brought him both joy and sorrow. He said, 'If my daughter hadn't passed away, she would have looked just like her. This child is exactly how I imagined my daughter would be.'
"He must have seen Cynthia as his own daughter. He gave her the pendant, saying she could reach out to him if she ever faced difficulties."
Selena was shocked. She had thought it was a gift from Justin's business partner.
Justin continued, "When the Xenos family moved, I lost contact. Now, we have a chance to reconnect. The Bennetts may not help, but we have this connection. When Sam returns, I'll have Cynthia visit him with the pendant. It would be great if she became his goddaughter. He's generous, and if I mention the Jones family's struggles, he might help."
Selena warned, "What if it doesn't go smoothly? Cynthia might not want to do it."
Justin frowned. "That's why we need a plan. If she doesn't want to, we can visit him ourselves, but he might not recognize me. It's best to take the pendant."
Justin sighed. "I met Henry, and he said they already gave the pendant to Cynthia. So we need to get it back."
Selena sneered. "Don't count on it. Cynthia won't go along with your flattery. She's straightforward and hates pleasing people."
Justin was unhappy. "I know her better than anyone! I just want your help brainstorming. This is about Velorix—it's your family's hard work for generations. I'm doing my best to uphold it, and you should too."
Selena pondered. Velorix was founded by her father, an ordinary man who built it for her mother. He later had an affair, and her mother died from depression. Selena didn't have deep feelings for the brand, only sympathy for her mother.
"Alright, I'll try my best," Selena said dismissively.
Justin beamed. "This is a chance to mend things with Cynthia. You two have had a good relationship for twenty years. If you can let go of past conflicts, our family can be as close as before. Which family in Roncrity could compare to us?"
