Chapter 315

Jonathan's face darkened. Cynthia, however, maintained a soft smile and casually said, "Mrs. Clark, this is my husband, Jonathan."

The woman, Emma Clark, was startled. "Oh, I'm so sorry," she stammered. "I must be getting old. My eyes are playing tricks on me."

After some more pleasantries, Emma said, "Cynthia, since you don't visit often, let me treat you to this meal." She then left.

Silence settled over the table. Cynthia unwrapped a fork and offered it to Jonathan, but he didn't take it. "Looks like you were popular in school," he said, a hint of jealousy in his voice.

Cynthia was amused by his expression. It clearly said, "I'm jealous; comfort me!" But she playfully ignored him, simply placing the fork in front of him.

"I was the school beauty," she said, picking up a piece of fish. "Got so many love letters and chocolates daily my hands nearly went numb. I suppose you were quite popular, too, weren't you?" she teased.

Cynthia assumed that with Jonathan's handsome face, he must have been a heartthrob in college. However, he hadn't been. He'd gone abroad as a teenager and lived as a recluse, avoiding social gatherings and coldly rejecting any advances. Rumors spread that he was aloof and indifferent, eventually deterring anyone from approaching him.

Jonathan snorted softly, picking up some food. "Do you think I'm the same around others as I am with you?"

Cynthia immediately understood. The difference between his public persona and his behavior with her was striking. Who would have guessed that a feared, seemingly cold man would act like a playful boy in her presence?

She remembered his seductive side in bed—a stark contrast to his current composed demeanor. Cynthia's cheeks flushed.

Jonathan sighed. "I wish I'd found you sooner." He hadn't lacked opportunities, but his complicated relationships and Whitney's presence had held him back, fearing for Cynthia's safety. She had been his faith all those years; he simply wanted to see her again, never expecting their love to blossom. His late realization filled him with regret.

Cynthia placed a piece of fish on Jonathan's plate. "It's not too late; everything is perfect now."

Jonathan smiled, looking up at her. "Cynthia, no matter what happens, no matter who I am, please never leave me." Cynthia thought he was worried about losing his battle with Whitney.

She laughed. "Don't worry. Even if you're not the Bennett heir, even if you lose everything, I won't leave you. At worst, I'll take care of you." Jonathan burst out laughing. "You'll take care of me?"

Cynthia nodded. "You might not know this yet, but your wife is quite wealthy." She laughed. "Don't worry about anything. Go ahead and fight Whitney. At worst, I can support you for life."

Jonathan knew he wouldn't need that. But seeing Cynthia's innocent sincerity, something in his long-frozen heart began to thaw. A dormant spring seemed to flow again.

"Hey, what are you doing here, babe?" Naomi's voice startled them. Cynthia and Jonathan looked up to see her standing casually by the table, looking surprised.

In a second, she squeezed into the seat next to Cynthia, their arms nearly touching. Without hesitation, she snatched Cynthia's fork and began eating the fish. "Cyn, you're being unfair. I've asked you to join me for drinks countless times, but you refuse. Now you're eating grilled fish with others without inviting me!"

Cynthia, though slightly helpless, was clearly used to this. She simply grabbed another fork. "Why are you here?"

"I'm accompanying someone to buy a voice recorder. He lost his, and they only have them here." The person in question appeared. Cynthia stood up hastily. "Dr. Xenos."

Hector smiled. "Cynthia, you don't need to be so formal." Cynthia looked embarrassed. "After so many years, it's hard to change."

Hector had seen Naomi steal the fork and was now merrily eating with it. His heart sank slightly; it seemed Naomi favored Cynthia.

Cynthia suggested, "Why don't you sit and eat with us?" Neither Hector nor Jonathan were enthusiastic, but Naomi was already eating.

She invited Hector. "Hector, relax. We're all friends here." Hector glanced at Jonathan, unsure if Naomi was oblivious or pretending.

Jonathan, however, maintained a stern expression, silently questioning their friendship. Hector thought, Didn't he see it? He had no choice but to sit down next to Jonathan.

The small table was suddenly crowded. Worried, Cynthia asked, "Hector, did you lose your recorder? Was it the one with ruby inlay?"

Hector hummed noncommittally. Cynthia, knowing Hector as a psychologist with expensive tastes, knew he owned a high-end voice recorder. But that recorder was from a niche Friyx brand—incredibly expensive. How could it be for sale here? she wondered.

Naomi casually said, "He's been unlucky lately. His computer crashed, his phone disappeared, and now he's dragged me along to buy a new recorder. It's like he's cursed."

She teased Hector, glancing at him with a smile. "You're turning into a walking disaster zone."

Hector quickly looked away. Cynthia noticed his evasiveness and the slight blush on his ears.

She suddenly understood and asked directly, "Are you two dating?"

Hector looked surprised, his cheeks flushing. He remained silent, confirming her suspicions.

Naomi quickly denied it. "What are you talking about? We're just good friends. You know what kind of person I like."

Hector stayed silent, focusing on his food. Naomi glanced at him and said, "Stop with the… [sentence unfinished]"
