Chapter 336

Jonathan was completely unaware of the day's events. Until the video leaked, he believed he was attending a typical jewelry exhibition.

Shirley was also unaware of the murder video. From Cynthia and Simon's conversation, Jonathan deduced they had planned everything. Cynthia aimed to publicly expose and ruin Shirley's reputation, a plan she had been orchestrating for a long time.

However, Jonathan was puzzled that he, Shirley's husband, was the last to know, while Simon was involved. A pang of jealousy stirred within him. He maintained a warm, outwardly sunny demeanor, however, moving close to Cynthia and putting an arm around her shoulder.

"Cynthia always mentioned an omnipotent mentor," he said. "I didn't expect it to be Mr. Wright. A unique bond indeed."

They all belonged to the Betrico elite. Jonathan and Simon had met briefly three years prior, during a clash over the Paradise Resort project. Both the Bennett and Wright Groups were vying for the land. Their encounter, at the home of a Construction Bureau director, was fleeting; they passed on the stairs. Jonathan knew the Wright Group also desired the land, but the Bennett Group ultimately secured both the land and the project.

While their interaction was minimal, they were rivals. The Wright Group, though young, had risen astonishingly fast in five years, in stark contrast to the four major families, whose wealth and status were built over generations. Simon's success was enviable.

Jonathan extended his hand. "Since Cynthia calls you Simon, I'll do the same. Thank you for caring for her all these years."

Simon's demeanor shifted to indifference. He shook Jonathan's hand politely. "She's important to me; protecting her is my lifelong duty. No need to thank me."

Cynthia observed the handshake, noticing the coldness in their eyes despite their smiles. She sensed a strange tension.

Simon's secretary approached, carrying a brocade box. "Mr. Wright, what should we do with this jewelry?" he asked, holding the "Queen's Tears," intended for Shirley but left behind by Whitney.

Simon said, "Since Whitney won the bid, it's hers. I'll send it tomorrow."

Cynthia countered, "Simon, give it to me. I'll deliver it tomorrow."

The box was given to Cynthia. The secretary, glancing at Simon, added, "Ms. Jones, Mr. Wright got you your favorite almond pudding."

Cynthia, hungry after skipping the break, looked at Jonathan, who said gently, "Go get some food. I want to talk with Simon."

Despite sensing the odd atmosphere, Cynthia left for dessert. Jonathan and Simon were alone.

"Did you know I'm married to Cynthia?" Jonathan asked. Their marriage was a secret, known only to a few close friends. However, Celine had leaked the news, making it public knowledge.

Simon's eyes narrowed. "Everyone knows Nina saw your marriage license and then had an accident, losing a leg. Mr. Bennett, what do you want to know? Did Cynthia tell me?"

Jonathan's gaze hardened. Simon's directness was unexpected. In their circles, schemes were common, but Simon's approach was different.

"How did she mention me?" Jonathan asked.

Simon chuckled. "You seem insecure. I taught her many things, but I forgot to teach her how to choose a man. Perhaps that's why she's interested in you."

Jonathan laughed. "I believed her when she said you weren't interested in women."

Simon looked up, a hint of sadness in his eyes. "She grew up with Filip. I only wanted her to be happy."

Both understood the unspoken implications.

Jonathan continued, "You didn't expect Filip to fail her, nor did you expect her to meet me, and for me to get to her first. You like Cynthia, but you were too late."

Simon remained impassive, though colder. "That's right, but as long as she's happy, she'll never know."

He moved closer, his voice sharp. "Jonathan, if you dare betray her like Filip, I'll kill you." A flash of murderous intent flickered in his eyes. Jonathan smiled.

His demeanor softened. His tone was serious and determined. "Don't worry, you won't get that chance."
