Chapter 73

Shirley wiped away her tears and tentatively asked, "Mr. Renner, why are you so concerned about my foster mother's case?"

She wondered if it was because of Cynthia. Did Cynthia want Rachel released? But Shirley realized this didn't make sense. Cynthia had never met Rachel. By the time Shirley returned to the Jones family, Rachel was already in prison. They never reunited, and never had the chance to speak. They couldn't have developed any feelings for each other.

Besides, Shirley thought Cynthia must have resented Rachel, whose notorious reputation had negatively impacted her. Being labeled the daughter of a murderer brought harsh criticism and stigma. Cynthia definitely wouldn't want anything to do with Rachel.

Jonathan remained indifferent. "Your adoptive mother worked as a live-in nanny for the Sullivan family in Betrico for three years. They have a good relationship with her and want to help. I have connections with the Sullivan family, and I'm acting on their behalf."

Shirley understood instantly. Rachel had worked as a housekeeper for the Sullivans, her best employer. Shirley remembered this from high school. Because Dennis often abused them, Rachel took Shirley everywhere. During that time, Shirley lived in Betrico and attended a private school as a non-resident.

The Sullivans helped Shirley transfer to a local private high school, and Rachel's high salary made it possible for Shirley to attend that elite school. However, in her third year, a mistake forced her return to Roncrity. Rachel quit her job and went back with her.

"So, that's it," Shirley thought. "If Cynthia isn't involved, it shouldn't be a problem."

Shirley said, "But it's not easy to overturn the appeal."

"Don't worry. I will pave the way for you," Jonathan said.

Shirley sighed with relief. "Rachel being in prison has been my biggest regret. I'm truly grateful you're willing to help. Honestly, I was already preparing to appeal and reopen her case. But the road ahead is tough. With your support, I feel much more at ease."

Shirley immediately decided to appeal for Rachel, after carefully weighing the pros and cons. It wasn't without drawbacks. Trying to overturn Rachel's case would likely upset Selena and expose Shirley's past, leading to mockery.

But she didn't care; it could bring her and Jonathan closer. They would share a common goal, requiring frequent discussion and negotiation, possibly even living together. Their relationship would progress. It would also improve her image in Jonathan's eyes.

Even if Rachel were released, she wouldn't have any connection to Shirley; Cynthia, as Rachel's biological daughter, would be responsible for her care. This would create a significant problem for Cynthia, effectively killing two birds with one stone for Shirley.

As for Selena, Shirley figured puppy dog eyes would smooth things over.

Chapter 73 (Continued)

Shirley was in a great mood. She'd planned to see Jonathan, but the unexpected outcome pleased her even more. She suggested, "It's already noon. How about we have lunch together and continue discussing the case?"

Entering the room, she saw untouched food. 'Will Jonathan invite me to lunch since I mentioned it?' she wondered. She noticed two sets of cutlery.

Jonathan said, "There's no need to rush the appeal. We can discuss it later. It's getting late, Ms. Jones. Please head back." He pointed toward the door, dismissing her.

Shirley felt disappointed, but reminded herself their relationship couldn't be rushed. Cynthia was still between them. However, she was confident she would win Jonathan's heart.

After Shirley left, Cynthia emerged from the bedroom. She sat at the dining table and sighed softly, "Thank goodness for your charm."

Jonathan, clearly dissatisfied, said, "Do you plan to compensate me for the emotional stress?"

Cynthia laughed, teasing, "You sound like I asked you to sell yourself."

Jonathan smiled. They sat and chatted over lunch.

"Shirley embarrassed the Jones family last night, making Justin unhappy. She can only count on Selena's protection. If she appeals for Rachel, it's like stabbing Selena in the back. It's a brilliant move," Jonathan remarked.

He stared into Cynthia's eyes. "It seems I can't offend you. You are very vindictive." He realized this was a ploy to drive a wedge between Shirley and Selena. Shirley wasn't foolish; she knew appealing for Rachel would upset Selena. But Cynthia had seen through her greed and obsession with Jonathan, using it to cloud Shirley's judgment.

Cynthia playfully touched Jonathan's chin with her pinky finger. "Don't worry. I won't use this trick on you." Jonathan grabbed her hand and kissed it. "You've already charmed me enough. That's the only move I need." After lunch, Cynthia napped briefly. She had to admit Jonathan was full of surprises.

At two o'clock, Cynthia showered. A clothing delivery arrived from the boutique. She changed into a fresh outfit and headed to the TV station. The prime-time news segment was live, and she didn't leave until half past seven.

Jonathan's car waited at the entrance. Fifteen minutes later, they were at the Yates residence.

Jonathan didn't go inside immediately. He opened the trunk, revealing a large number of items.

Cynthia was surprised. "What are you doing?"

Jonathan smiled. "It's the first time I'm meeting your parents. I can't show up empty-handed."

Cynthia chuckled. 'Does he really think of it as a meeting with the parents? Has he forgotten this used to be my in-laws' home?'

She said nothing, helping Jonathan carry the items. Pamela saw Jonathan's car and came out to greet them. Cynthia greeted Pamela before introducing Jonathan. "Pamela, this is Jonathan. Jonathan, this is my mother, Pamela."

Pamela greeted Jonathan enthusiastically. "Welcome, Mr. Renner. It's a pleasure finally meeting you."

"Mrs. Yates, please feel free to call me Jon," Jonathan replied. (The passage cuts off here.)
