Chapter 459
At Turner Group, Bowen had just finished going through a document when he noticed Hugoโs name flashing on his phone, a bit surprised by the unexpected call.
โBowen, did I do something wrong?โ Hugo sounded lost and frustrated after his falling out with Birgitte.
He knew he still cared about Grace, but in his heart, she was just like a little sister to him. He never thought heโd made Birgitte suffer because of her.
Hugo couldnโt figure it out. Heโd gotten to the bottom of things and tried to make things right for Birgitte. He thought it was the right thing to do. Since he was helpless, he thought Bowen was the only person he could think of to turn to.
Bowen listened quietly, then let out a soft laugh. โYou did the right thing, but did it help?โ
โDid it help?โ Hugo was stunned. He couldnโt figure out how those two things even belonged in the same sentence.
โLet me put it another way,โ Bowen said. โDoes it matter if Grace lives or dies? The person you love and want to be with is Birgitte, not Grace.โ
It hit Hugo like a ton of bricks. All at once, Hugo realized the root of the conflict between him and Birgitte.
It wasnโt about so-called fairness. What Birgitte wanted was for him to take a firm stand by her side when it mattered, and he had never shown that kind of resolve.
โBowen, I get it now.โ Hugo nodded.
โSo, howโs it going?โ Birgitte asked.
โHard to say,โ Aubree replied, taking the water Birgitte handed her. โHeโs mentally ill, and he wonโt be held criminally responsible. At most, theyโll send him to a psychiatric hospital.โ
They stood outside the hospital room, murmuring.
โI know Grace orchestrated this mess,โ Birgitte said, her eyes flashing with anger.
โSo what if heโs mentally ill?โ Birgitte said through gritted teeth. โEven if they send him to a psych ward, we still have ways to deal with him!โ
Patrick was just a regular employee. However, he risked his life to save Birgitte. She was grateful, and that was why she couldnโt let him take the fall for nothing.
โIf it werenโt for him, weโd both be screwed,โ Aubree admitted, still shaken. โNo matter how capable I am, I couldnโt have handled that situation alone."
โIf we want to bring Grace to justice, we need solid evidence that shows she was behind all this!โ Birgitte said.
โThereโs no rushing this,โ Aubree replied. โYouโve been at the hospital all day looking after Patrick. Iโve already arranged for a care worker to take over, so go home and get some rest. This whole thing is going to blow up online, and thereโll be plenty of trouble to deal with later. Donโt let yourself get exhausted.โ Aubree patted Birgitte on the shoulder.
โI know,โ Birgitte said. โIโll stay a bit longer to make sure the care worker is thorough enough. After that, Iโll leave.โ
Aubree didnโt insist, just told her not to wear herself out.
At Sรผdlichen Strand, Hugo charged through the halls, completely ignoring the staff who tried to stop him. โSir, you canโt go in there!โ an assistant said, frantically blocking his way.
โWeโre in the middle of recording a show. If you rush in now, youโll disrupt it!โ the assistant added.
As a bit of reason finally returned to him, Hugo stopped in his tracks. โIs Grace in there?โ he asked.
โYes, she is, Sir,โ the assistant replied. โIf youโre here to see her, you can wait in the lounge. Once Grace finishes recording, weโll let her know youโre here.โ
The assistant took a good look at Hugo. He was well-dressed and good-looking, but she couldnโt quite figure out who he was.
โIโll wait here then,โ Hugo said.
About an hour later, the showโs shooting finally wrapped. When Grace stepped out, she spotted Hugo leaning against the wall. Her eyes sparkled with surprise and delight. โHugo! Are you here to pick me up after work?"
โI had a late shift today. You must have been waiting for a while.โ Grace approached.
Hugo had just finished smoking a cigarette, his voice hoarse. โYeah, I guess so. Are you done for the day?โ
