Chapter 462
Birgitte didnโt move. She just met his gaze. โDo you need something?โ
โI came to bring you thisโฆโ Hugo started, but didnโt finish. And I want to make things clear with you, he thought.
Hugo glanced at Patrick, who was lying in bed and looking at him curiously. Bitterness welled up inside him. Compared to his hesitation, someone who could step up and protect her in a moment of danger was probably the kind of man sheโd want.
Hugo swallowed back the words he wanted to say. None of it mattered anymore. โThis is the evidence I had someone look into. This proves Grace was hinting at and inciting her fans. This will help you out of this mess,โ he said, handing Birgitte a folder.
โAnd what about you?โ Birgitte asked concernedly. โPeople online are all dragging your name through the mud. Arenโt you going to get punished for what you did?โ
Seeing the worry in her eyes, Hugo felt a weight lift off his shoulders. Knowing she still cared was enough for him. โItโs nothing. At most, theyโll want me to clarify,โ he replied.
Birgitte took the evidence. There was no need to make things difficult for herself. Still, she said softly to Hugo, โThank you.โ There was nothing else.
Knowing it was time to go, Hugo quietly picked up the fruit scattered on the floor. โIโm leaving now.โ Then, he added, โAndโฆ Birgitte, goodbye.โ
Will this be our last meeting? This thought flashed through both their minds. Are we going to meet again in the future?
After Hugo left, Birgitte seemed a bit out of place. Her mind was scattered.
โBirgitte, let the attendant take care of me,โ Patrick said, his eyes sparkling with mischief and a grin that was almost too lively. โNow that youโve got the evidence, take care of the important stuff. Iโll be fine. Once Iโm discharged, Iโll hurry back to the company and work hard to become your right-hand man in no time!โ
Birgitte let out a sigh of relief. โAlright.โ
With evidence from Hugo, Birgitte was able to handle the whole mess way more smoothly. She didnโt even need Aubreeโs help. She handled it all by herself.
Birgitte posted the evidence online. Since the police already had a file on the case, they immediately followed up once she uploaded it. It didnโt take long before Grace was arrested for inciting her fans to commit assault.
The online drama died quickly after that. No one was sticking up for Grace anymore. Instead, people started praising Hugo for having such sharp instincts and calling out Graceโs tricks from the start.
But none of that could change the fact that Hugo had broken the rules. He was transferred to a county police department. Rumor said it was the Moore family who made the call.
The Moore family figured he was still too impulsive, so they wanted him to slow down for a couple of years before bringing him back up.
As for Grace, the evidence against her was ironclad. Even with the Lawson family hiring the best lawyers money could buy, there was no way Grace was getting out of jail time.
โElizabeth, help me. You said this wouldnโt trace back to me!โ Grace cried out. As soon as she was allowed a phone call, Grace dialed Elizabeth.
โHow was I supposed to know youโd be dumb enough to use your social media account to contact people?โ Elizabeth sneered, not even bothering to hide her contempt.
Since Patrick had earned Birgitteโs trust, Grace was of no use to her anymore. What happened to Grace had nothing to do with her at this point.
โGrace, youโre not a child anymore. Itโs time you took responsibility for what youโve done,โ Elizabeth said coldly.
Grace was in utter disbelief. โWhereโs Carmen? Wasnโt this her idea in the first place? Where is she?โ
Elizabeth listened to the furious shouting on the phone, curled her lip in annoyance, and glanced sideways at Carmen sitting right next to her. โSheโs calling your name.โ
Carmen shrugged. โThatโs got nothing to do with me. Her fans did it, and sheโs the one who told them what to do.โ
Grace was utterly crushed. At that moment, she realized she was nothing but a pawn in someoneโs game.
Her mind drifted back to how good things used to be between her and Hugo. If she hadnโt been so extreme, she couldโve been the good girl he always looked out for. If she hadnโt gone after Birgitte like that, even if those two ended up together, sheโd have one more person in her life who cared about her. That wouldnโt be so bad.
Too bad she only figured that out when it was already far too late.
