Chapter 470
The journey to the detention center had been rough. Aubreeโs wrists ached from the tight cuffs, and the throbbing pain from the "special" treatment sheโd received during transport made every movement excruciating.
โWhatโs wrong with you?โ Oliver noticed how unnaturally pale Aubreeโs face was.
She let out a bitter laugh. โSpare me the act, Mr. Lawson. You know exactly whatโs wrong. Your men made sure of that.โ
She figured it was all Oliverโs doing.
Oliver understood instantly. The arrest had been carried out under his command, and the people carrying it out probably thought sheโd pissed him off. To them, she was just a businesswoman, so they likely tried to curry favor with him by making things extra tough for her behind his back.
โWhat are you doing?โ Aubree snapped.
She was startled as Oliver suddenly grabbed the hem of her shirt. โAll I did was throw a bit of sarcasm at him. Is he really going to take it this far?โ
โNo, waitโฆโ The fabric slid up slightly, revealing mottled bruises along her ribs.
โEven under arrest, this kind of โinterrogationโ is a violation of protocol!โ Aubree said. โI want my lawyer.โ
Oliver jerked his hand back, guilt flashing in his eyes. โI didnโt order this. I was just checking your injuries.โ
Aubree had been here for quite some time now, and it was almost midnight. Despite GrabCheapโs efforts, the online controversy still raged unchecked. Oliver unlocked her handcuffs. โYou can sit comfortably, but I canโt release you yet.โ
โIt wasnโt him?โ Aubree thought, surprised.
She studied him. โSo, Oliver wasnโt cut from the same cloth as his cousin, Elizabeth. Interesting.โ
โThanks, but I donโt need your permission to leave,โ she said, stretching lazily. โYouโve released my assistant, right? They should be here any minute.โ
โWhat does that mean?โ Oliver wondered.
As far as Oliver knew, Aubree was just a promising newcomer. Heโd only just been transferred to Rithol City, and Elizabeth had come to him for help to keep Aubree under control.
So, where did this unshakable confidence come from?
โYou really donโt take the Lawson family seriously, do you?โ Oliver said coldly. He was determined to keep Aubree in custody. He wanted to see who could let her go.
Oliver watched as a smirk tugged at Aubreeโs lips, her whole attitude screaming defiance like she had nothing to fear. For some reason, that really ticked him off.
โHow dare she dismiss me like this? Iโm a major. Does she really think she can just treat me like Iโm nobody?โ Oliver thought.
Wherever he went, whether on official business or facilitating matters for the Lawson Group, people showed him respect.
The Lawson name could crush even billion-dollar corporations without strong backing. It was only a matter of resources.
If not for Elizabeth insisting they wait for the Wilsons to intervene, he wouldโveโฆ
โThe Lawsons?โ Aubree chuckled. โIn Rithol, theyโre hardly the powerhouse you think. You should worry more about explaining those interrogation โtechniquesโ to the press. Iโll be getting a full medical examination the moment Iโm out.โ
Oliverโs voice turned cold. โYouโre threatening me right now? Arenโt you afraid of what I might do to you?โ
โMy, what an impressive display of authority, Major Lawson!โ
โAubree!โ
Just as Oliverโs warning left his mouth, suddenly several voices called out, coming straight toward the interrogation room.
Next came a rush of hurried footsteps.
The door to the interrogation room was thrown open, and Oliver turned to see two younger guys supporting an old man with gray hair but still full of energy, with a middle-aged man in military uniform following behind.
โWho are you? How dare you barge into the interrogation room?โ Oliver snapped.
Lawson boy, huh? The old man, supported by Bowen and Mark, gently pushed them aside and leaned on his cane. His sharp gaze landed directly on Oliver, making him involuntarily shiver.
