Chapter 487
She gave Bowen a quick rundown of her situation.
Bowen: [Iโm just nearby for a meeting. Iโll come pick you upโbe good and wait for me.]
Now that she was taken care of, Aubree messaged her driver to let him know he didnโt need to come back for her.
Just then, a sharp honk made her look up.
The blaring horn forced her to glance up, and as the car window rolled down, she was surprised to see it was Oliver behind the wheel.
โIโll give you a ride home,โ he said.
Aubree blinked, wondering if sheโd just heard him right. Her gaze drifted instinctively to the back seat. She thought, โWait, wasnโt he supposed to be with Elizabeth?โ
โElizabeth isnโt here. She took another car,โ Oliver said.
โDoesnโt matter if Elizabeth is here or not, thereโs no way Iโd get in a car with him,โ Aubree thought.
She took a half-step back. โThank you for the offer, Mr. Lawson, but Iโll pass. Besides, it really wouldnโt be appropriate for us to ride together.โ
โWhy is that?โ Oliver arched an eyebrow, stepping out of the car with a casual ease.
With that military background of his, he could make even the plainest suit look sharp and commanding. There was just something about the way he wore it that set him apart from everyone else.
He looked at her, a hint of a smirk on his lips. โSo, what kind of relationship do you think we have, Miss Miller?โ
Aubree stood her ground. โIโd say weโre on opposite sides. At the very least, I wouldnโt get in a car with my enemy.โ
Oliver let out a small laugh. โWhy not just take this as my way of making it up to you for being rude last time, Miss Miller?โ
He nodded toward the car. โCome on, your driver already left. You wonโt find a taxi out here, and itโs so late. Are you really planning to stand around for the next hour or two?โ
Oliver was used to taking charge. Before Aubree could protest, he just reached out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her toward the car without giving her a chance to argue.
โNo, really, Iโm fineโฆโ Aubree tried to shake him off. She could usually handle most guys, but up against someone like Oliver, with his military background, she didnโt stand a chance.
โItโs not like Iโm going to do anything to youโฆโ Oliver couldnโt understand why Aubree was making such a fuss. It was just a convenient ride, and with so many people around, he wouldn't do anything to her.
Just as he was about to speak, a hand shot out from the side. Its long fingers clamped tightly around his wrist and wrenched it away with force.
Bowen pulled Aubree straight into his arms, declaring his claim, โMr. Lawson, sheโs my girlfriend. You donโt need to worry about her.โ
The warm, soft feeling in his hand disappeared all of a sudden. Oliver subconsciously curled his empty palm, and for some reason, he found himself really annoyed with Bowen.
Before coming to Rithol City, Oliver had already heard a lot about Bowen. He used to have some respect for him, but at that moment, he honestly couldnโt stand the sight of him.
โGirlfriend?โ Oliverโs eyes swept over the two of them as he thought.
Heโd always thought there was nothing between them but business. After all, Bowen hadnโt even bothered to show up tonight.
Watching how Aubree leaned on Bowen without a second thought, Oliver gave a short, mocking laugh. โWhatโs the hurry, Mr. Turner? I was just being nice, thatโs all.
โSince Miss Miller doesnโt need my help, I wonโt butt in,โ Oliver said with a shrug.
He didnโt argue further, just shrugged and turned to leave.
โSheโs just his girlfriend, so what?โ Oliver scoffed to himself.
Bowen narrowed his eyes, feeling seriously irritated. He thought, โI step away for just a moment, and already those sketchy guys are eyeing my Bree?
โDamin, thatโs enough to piss me off!โ
โItโs fine. Letโs just head home,โ Aubree said. She really didnโt want to stick around and be gawked at like some sideshow.
โKelvin told me Alvinโs joined the Turner Group?โ Aubree asked.
โYeah, heโs just starting out at the bottom for now,โ Bowen replied.
โHeโฆโ Aubree started to ask, but then stopped herself. After all, this was the Turner familyโs private affairs. It wasnโt really her place to get involved.
Bowen offered a reassuring smile. โItโs all right. Alvin just wants to get some real-world experience, and thatโs not a bad thing at all.
โActually, Turner Group is planning to roll out an early internship program soon. Itโll be open to college freshmen and sophomores, and those who perform well can join Turner Group directly after they finish their upperclassman courses.โ
โThatโs a great idea,โ Aubree replied. By bringing in promising talent early, even if some of them didnโt end up joining Turner Group, it still gave the company a head start and a stronger competitive edge.
