Chapter 487

She gave Bowen a quick rundown of her situation.

Bowen: [Iโ€™m just nearby for a meeting. Iโ€™ll come pick you upโ€”be good and wait for me.]

Now that she was taken care of, Aubree messaged her driver to let him know he didnโ€™t need to come back for her.

Just then, a sharp honk made her look up.

The blaring horn forced her to glance up, and as the car window rolled down, she was surprised to see it was Oliver behind the wheel.

โ€œIโ€™ll give you a ride home,โ€ he said.

Aubree blinked, wondering if sheโ€™d just heard him right. Her gaze drifted instinctively to the back seat. She thought, โ€˜Wait, wasnโ€™t he supposed to be with Elizabeth?โ€™

โ€œElizabeth isnโ€™t here. She took another car,โ€ Oliver said.

โ€˜Doesnโ€™t matter if Elizabeth is here or not, thereโ€™s no way Iโ€™d get in a car with him,โ€™ Aubree thought.

She took a half-step back. โ€œThank you for the offer, Mr. Lawson, but Iโ€™ll pass. Besides, it really wouldnโ€™t be appropriate for us to ride together.โ€

โ€œWhy is that?โ€ Oliver arched an eyebrow, stepping out of the car with a casual ease.

With that military background of his, he could make even the plainest suit look sharp and commanding. There was just something about the way he wore it that set him apart from everyone else.

He looked at her, a hint of a smirk on his lips. โ€œSo, what kind of relationship do you think we have, Miss Miller?โ€

Aubree stood her ground. โ€œIโ€™d say weโ€™re on opposite sides. At the very least, I wouldnโ€™t get in a car with my enemy.โ€

Oliver let out a small laugh. โ€œWhy not just take this as my way of making it up to you for being rude last time, Miss Miller?โ€

He nodded toward the car. โ€œCome on, your driver already left. You wonโ€™t find a taxi out here, and itโ€™s so late. Are you really planning to stand around for the next hour or two?โ€

Oliver was used to taking charge. Before Aubree could protest, he just reached out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her toward the car without giving her a chance to argue.

โ€œNo, really, Iโ€™m fineโ€ฆโ€ Aubree tried to shake him off. She could usually handle most guys, but up against someone like Oliver, with his military background, she didnโ€™t stand a chance.

โ€œItโ€™s not like Iโ€™m going to do anything to youโ€ฆโ€ Oliver couldnโ€™t understand why Aubree was making such a fuss. It was just a convenient ride, and with so many people around, he wouldn't do anything to her.

Just as he was about to speak, a hand shot out from the side. Its long fingers clamped tightly around his wrist and wrenched it away with force.

Bowen pulled Aubree straight into his arms, declaring his claim, โ€œMr. Lawson, sheโ€™s my girlfriend. You donโ€™t need to worry about her.โ€

The warm, soft feeling in his hand disappeared all of a sudden. Oliver subconsciously curled his empty palm, and for some reason, he found himself really annoyed with Bowen.

Before coming to Rithol City, Oliver had already heard a lot about Bowen. He used to have some respect for him, but at that moment, he honestly couldnโ€™t stand the sight of him.

โ€˜Girlfriend?โ€™ Oliverโ€™s eyes swept over the two of them as he thought.

Heโ€™d always thought there was nothing between them but business. After all, Bowen hadnโ€™t even bothered to show up tonight.

Watching how Aubree leaned on Bowen without a second thought, Oliver gave a short, mocking laugh. โ€œWhatโ€™s the hurry, Mr. Turner? I was just being nice, thatโ€™s all.

โ€œSince Miss Miller doesnโ€™t need my help, I wonโ€™t butt in,โ€ Oliver said with a shrug.

He didnโ€™t argue further, just shrugged and turned to leave.

โ€˜Sheโ€™s just his girlfriend, so what?โ€™ Oliver scoffed to himself.

Bowen narrowed his eyes, feeling seriously irritated. He thought, โ€˜I step away for just a moment, and already those sketchy guys are eyeing my Bree?

โ€˜Damin, thatโ€™s enough to piss me off!โ€™

โ€œItโ€™s fine. Letโ€™s just head home,โ€ Aubree said. She really didnโ€™t want to stick around and be gawked at like some sideshow.

โ€œKelvin told me Alvinโ€™s joined the Turner Group?โ€ Aubree asked.

โ€œYeah, heโ€™s just starting out at the bottom for now,โ€ Bowen replied.

โ€œHeโ€ฆโ€ Aubree started to ask, but then stopped herself. After all, this was the Turner familyโ€™s private affairs. It wasnโ€™t really her place to get involved.

Bowen offered a reassuring smile. โ€œItโ€™s all right. Alvin just wants to get some real-world experience, and thatโ€™s not a bad thing at all.

โ€œActually, Turner Group is planning to roll out an early internship program soon. Itโ€™ll be open to college freshmen and sophomores, and those who perform well can join Turner Group directly after they finish their upperclassman courses.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a great idea,โ€ Aubree replied. By bringing in promising talent early, even if some of them didnโ€™t end up joining Turner Group, it still gave the company a head start and a stronger competitive edge.
