Chapter 549

โ€œThis isnโ€™t just some random gossip! I went to confront Samuel myself. Heโ€™s never been able to lie, not since we were kids. With how he acted, you could tell he was hiding something. This isnโ€™t just some baseless rumor!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough!โ€ David snapped. โ€œWe have guests here. Do you think this is how you should act?โ€

Millie reluctantly gave in under her fatherโ€™s stern gaze, her head hanging low. โ€œAlright,โ€ she sighed.

Davidโ€™s tone softened as he reassured, โ€œIโ€™ll talk to the village chief about this when I get a chance.โ€

That reassurance finally made Millie feel a little less upset.

However, she didnโ€™t feel like eating at all. Glancing at the dishes on the table, she stated, โ€œIโ€™ve no appetite so Iโ€™ll just go upstairs.โ€

For once, David didnโ€™t reprimand her for her manners, and he told Jillian to bring some food up to her room.

โ€œSorry you had to witness our family drama. I only have these two kids, and theyโ€™re not exactly making me proud. I guess I just have to worry about them a bit more,โ€ David said.

The meal wasnโ€™t exactly relaxing.

When it was time to leave, David personally walked them out. He stated, โ€œIโ€™ll treat you all to another meal after we finalize the fruit business.โ€

โ€œMy apologies for not being a better host today.โ€

Aubree smiled in response, โ€œYouโ€™re too polite. Jillianโ€™s cooking is wonderful, and we really enjoyed the meal."

โ€œItโ€™s not our place to comment on your family matters, but I hope everything works out for your family.โ€

David just moved his lips, sighed, and left it at that.

After leaving Ridgehaven Town, they headed straight back to the hotel.

Bowen reflected, โ€œFrom what we learned today, it seems the village chief commands a lot of respect around here.โ€

Aubree nodded in agreement, adding, โ€œNot only that, but the last failed demolition had a lot to do with the village chief as well.โ€

โ€œSo, should we go meet the village chief?โ€ Vincent couldnโ€™t hide his excitement and asked.

โ€˜If we can just deal with the village chief, doesnโ€™t that mean the project would be in the bag?โ€™ Vincent thought.

Aubree glanced at Bowen and shook her head, stating, โ€œNo."

โ€œIf we go to the village chief, weโ€™ll blow our cover."

โ€œWeโ€™re not even sure we can talk him into it, and if we get found out, weโ€™ll end up just like the Wilson Group and the Diamonde Groupโ€”the same ones you were laughing at earlier today.โ€

Thinking about what theyโ€™d heard today about what happened to the people from the Diamonde Group and Wilson Group, Vincent couldnโ€™t help but shiver. โ€˜Man, that was seriously messed up,โ€™ he thought.

โ€œSo, weโ€™re really going to buy fruit tomorrow?โ€ Vincent asked, sounding a bit defeated.

He thought, โ€˜Itโ€™s not like we canโ€™t afford it, but man, it just feels like weโ€™re throwing money away for nothing.

โ€˜And if we actually go through with the deal and buy the fruit, doesnโ€™t that mean weโ€™ll have no excuse to stick around anymore?โ€™

โ€œCome on, itโ€™s business. Stalling is part of the game, isnโ€™t it?โ€ Aubree joked.

โ€œWe canโ€™t do much about the village chief for now, but we can start by visiting those holdouts and scoping out the village. Once we land the project, weโ€™ll have to figure out how to develop the land anyway, so we might as well put that on our agenda,โ€ Aubree said, her eyes gleaming with a look that said she was in it to win it.

Vincent was a bit stunned. โ€˜Are we really planning for the future before weโ€™ve even secured the land?โ€™ he thought. However, seeing Aubreeโ€™s confidence fired him up. They were already ahead of everyone else, and it felt as if they had essentially secured the project.

Bowen tapped the table and added, โ€œThis project has been on the table for a few years now. The reason they couldnโ€™t use any hardline tactics before is because there are descendants of martyrs living on that land, and the higher-ups donโ€™t want to get rough with them."

โ€œThereโ€™s just this one old man left, and heโ€™s stubborn as a mule. Thereโ€™s no way heโ€™ll move, no matter what you say."

โ€œThe guyโ€™s pretty old now. If you go bother him too much, heโ€™ll start swinging his cane at you. No one dares fight back as everyoneโ€™s scared something might go wrong.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s another headache for us."

โ€˜Even if Aubree manages to win over the village chief, this is still a problem we canโ€™t just ignore,โ€™ he thought.

With that, Bowen chimed in with his thoughts, โ€œWe should keep tabs on those rumors about the village chiefโ€™s son and Josephine. Letโ€™s see if we can find a chance to get an inside scoop. For now, letโ€™s figure out what to do about that old guy.โ€
