Chapter 30
Nached by Wendy's words, the pressure feeling almost tangible, she forced a brave smile and looked Wendy in the eye. โCall it even? Wendy, weโve never seen eye to eye. Itโs my victory because youโve never played fair with me.โ
Wendyโs anger sparked. โNatalie, despite everything, weโre family.โ
Natalieโs reply was quick and to the point. โThen why did we sign those disownment papers?โ
Wendy was left without a response, the weight of their decision settling in the air. She gazed at Natalie, recognizing her own youthful beauty in her, but all she felt was disappointment. โNatalie, youโve really disappointed me.โ
A voice, weathered and cold, broke the silence. โYou never gave her any hope, so where do you get off being disappointed?โ
Wendy turned to see Valerie helping Lambert approach.
Natalieโs tone turned gentle and sweet when she addressed Lambert. โGrandpa, I missed you inside. Did you get spooked?โ
Lambert thought to himself, โCanโt this little rascal spare me some embarrassment in public? Iโm not someone who gets easily spooked, okay?โ
Confronting Wendy, Lambert declared sternly, โScrew you. You only reach out to Natalie when she serves your purposes. Sheโs been mistreated by people like you. You have no right to be disappointed in her. The Shawn family is just a bunch of bullies.โ
Wendy was astonished to see the person who had raised her daughter, now understanding why Natalieโs behavior had been so out of control.
Easton looked at Lambert, a simple old man, and pondered, โIs he Natalieโs grandfather? Why had Natalie never mentioned him?โ
Lambert, his eyes sparkling, said to Natalie, โDonโt waste that pretty dress. Letโs go to a speed dating event. I met a chess buddy at the park. His 25-year-old grandson just returned from studying abroad. He runs his own business, is looking to settle down. He could be a great match for you.โ
Natalie was astonished, since this wasnโt part of her past life. โGrandpa, why would I go to a speed dating event? Iโve just become single after a messy relationship. Why should I rush into marriage?โ
โYouโre feeling down, which makes it a great time to meet someone new,โ Lambert said, grinning. โIโve seen this guyโs photosโheโs handsome and rich. Youโll like him. If not, Iโll find more options for you.โ
Lambertโs words left Natalie and Valerie quite astonished.
Easton interjected, his teeth grinding. โSir, Natalie is still technically my wife. She canโt go on a blind date.โ
Lambert was taken aback, concern etched on his face. โNatalie, didnโt you tell me you were divorced?โ
Natalie reassured Lambert, โGrandpa, Iโve signed the divorce papers, and he signed them even before I did. On top of that, they had me sign disownment papers too.โ
Lambert let out a sigh of relief. โI was worried Iโd have to do something about that awful man if you were still with him.โ His words left Easton without a response.
With a smile, Lambert continued, โBut since youโre divorced, thatโs what counts. We need to go meet that young man I mentioned. Heโs handsome and, in my opinion, the perfect grandson-in-law.โ
Trusting her grandfatherโs judgment, Natalie decided to give this a shot. A playful smile spread across her face as she said, โAlright, Grandpa, letโs go and see what this guyโs all about.โ
