Chapter 1: Let’s Discuss Divorce

I called Yvette, but she didn’t pick up. The same thing happened during my lunch break. Before hurrying to Yvette’s office, I printed three sets of divorce papers. I ran into Oliver at the entrance. Shaded, he cautiously asked, “Mr. Yares, why are you here?”

I stared at him with a frown. “Didn’t you get my call? Where’s Yvette?”

Looking nervous, he hesitantly offered, “Ms. Jenning is in a meeting for a partnership. Why don’t you take a seat while you wait for her?”

I tried my best to suppress my irritation and sat down in the lounge room. Oliver served me a cup of coffee. He then carefully prodded, “Why did you leave early that day? Ms. Jenning searched high and low for you!”

Raising an eyebrow, I asked in confusion, “What for?”

I thought Yvette had bombarded my phone with calls after I left with Lila and gave her the cold shoulder. But from the sound of it, she had seemed intent on finding me for a reason.

Oliver scrunched up his brows. “In case you didn’t know, BK Coup is influential in Shanghai. Ms. Jenning was worried when you weren’t in your hotel room and weren’t replying to her texts. She would have called the police and rushed to the BK Group’s office to look for you if Thadi hadn’t found you at the hotel.”

I was taken aback by his concern for me. Still, I nonchalantly shrugged and sipped my coffee. That cheater was good at multitasking. She could actually take care of Randall while looking for me.

I heard that the guys from ts Group were attested. Is it because they had hurt Randall Caldwell badly?

Oliver scratched his nose with an awkward expression. “Mr. Caldwell is indeed in bad shape. I heard that he’s suffered nerve damage and a concussion from the head injury. He displays symptoms of intermittent amnesia.”

“I had no choice but to get Ms. Jenning to help Angwiny. Ms. Jenning made the move against BK Group for you, not for Mr. Caldwell.”

I raised my head with an incredulous expression. I burst into laughter. “Is this a joke?”

Oliver stared at me with a serious face. He started explaining, “Didn’t you know that Ms. Jenning cared deeply about you the day you and Mr. Caldwell both got into trouble? She had a fallout with the B Group because of you.”

“Ms. Jenning is sharp-tongued, but she rarely hurts anyone. Still, she protected Deborah Bentley’s injured right hand that day,”

“You and Bentley are both artists. You should understand the importance of protecting your hand. Ms. Jenning did this for no one else but you.”

Oliver was indeed Yvette’s trusted assistant. He had actually done me a great service.

Only I knew that Yvette was angry because I had told her about Randall’s injury. After all, her expression had soured upon seeing me, and she had no intention of paying me any attention. I shook my head helplessly. Looking composed, I gently tapped the divorce papers that rested on my thigh.

I said calmly, “Whatever. It’s not important. How long do I have to wait? I need to get lunch after I’m done with this.”

After preceding to Yvette’s office, Oliver whispered, “She should be done soon.”

He glanced at me with his lips pursed into a tight line, and he looked hesitant to speak. But he finally asked, “Why are you so cold to Ms. Jenning lately? You even ditched her and came home alone. Do you really have no feelings left for her?”

I stared at the coffee in boredom. A smirk appeared on my lips as I scoffed. “What’s so solvable about Yvette? I was nice to her in the past only because she was my wife. Now that I’ve decided I don’t want to stay married, why should I bother pretending anymore?”

I leaned back, letting the words pour out. “Have you seen her? She walks around with a sour expression every day, as if the world owes her something. She’s sharp-tongued and bad-tempered, and her looks are her only redeeming quality. Tell me, which man would genuinely find her appealing?”

“Just look at the daughters of other wealthy families. Suitors line up for them. But Yvette has the fewest of all. Isn’t that telling enough? People aren’t blind.”

In my memory, Zachary and I were the only ones who had ever tried to woo Yvette. Both in the past and present, I hadn’t seen Yvette with any other men except for Zachary and Randall. Randall, her fast crush, had been her relentless pursuit. Zachary, on the other hand, had given up on pursuing her, much like Toner had.

By the way, I was expecting Oliver to either agree or retort, yet I was met with silence. I turned around and saw Oliver staring at me with a stiff expression, his gaze shifting nervously to…

My heart sank. Ugh, did he hear what I just said?

I braced myself and spun around stiffly. There she was – Yvette’s hourglass figure was leaning casually against the doorframe.

When I looked at her, she winked at me before taking a casual sip of her drink.

My throat tightened, and my body froze. How much had he heard? It didn’t matter. After all, we were already in the middle of a divorce, and the last thing I needed was to facilitate more conflict. I quickly put on a smile. “What a coincidence, Ms. Jenning. Are you done with the meeting?”

Yvette studied me in silence. Although I could not see her face from where I was seated, I sensed that she was wearing an intimidating look.

“Come on in.” With that, she disappeared into her office.

Oliver dared not even look up. He kept his head low as he cleaned up the office.

Scratching my nose, I set my things on the table and grabbed the papers before entering Yvette’s office. Scanning around, I realized that the mess I had made in her office had been cleared away. Dressed in an athleisure outfit, Yvette sat on her chair with a calm expression. She didn’t even wear heels that day.

Worried that I might upset her and jeopardize the proceedings, I grabbed a water bottle from the fridge for her. “Ms. Jenning, you must be thirsty.”

I placed the mineral water bottle down. Without looking at me, she jeered, “I don’t deserve your service because you’re not into me. Quit acting around me.”

She sounded funny, but I didn’t fight with her. Instead, I placed the bottle in front of her and grabbed a chair for myself. Once seated, I laid out the three sets of divorce papers in front of her. “Fine. Let’s get to the point. The divorce papers…”
