“Grandma…” Madelyn blushed deeply.

Seeing her flushed and adorable face, Agnes grew even more fond of her. She nodded, “Okay, okay. I won’t say anything else. I won’t.”

Only then did the blush fade away from Madelyn’s cheeks.

At that moment, Marsha, standing at the side, let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Madelyn, I heard you caused quite a scene at the banquet earlier.”

Madelyn paused, casting a puzzled look at Marsha.

Marsha scoffed coldly. “Don’t think that by putting on this face, I’ll pretend to know nothing. Madelyn, I’m not purposely picking on you, but you’ve really crossed the line! How could you have no sense of shame at all?”

By the end of her speech, her tone was downright accusatory.

Madelyn looked utterly bewildered.

“What on earth happened?”

Agnes and Steven were both confused.

“Marsha, as an elder, you shouldn’t lose your temper with the younger ones so easily. Whatever happened, just explain it calmly,” advised Agnes solemnly.

Marsha took a deep breath, her expression serious as she looked at Agnes. “Mom, stop defending Madelyn. If you knew what she’s done, you’d be just as angry.”

Madelyn was utterly bewildered. What did I do?

“What on earth happened?” Agnes was also quite curious.

Marsha had been suppressing her fury for a while now. At this moment, she simply let it all out and scolded Madelyn, “Madelyn, you’ve been engaged to Sebastian for a long time. I’m not asking you to be a dutiful wife and good mother, but I’m begging you to at least uphold some decency! How could you run off for another man during such an important banquet?”

“What?” Madelyn tensed up.

It must have been Beatrice, that blabbermouth, spouting nonsense again. D*mn it….

“Mom, there’s been a misunderstanding, I didn’t do this,” Madelyn immediately clarified.

Marsha coldly snorted. “I don’t care whether you realize this or not, but from now on, I hope you remember your place. You’re the daughter–in–law of the Lockhart family. Your actions don’t only reflect on you. They reflect on the entire Lockhart family as well. I hope you won’t do anything to tarnish your own reputation.”

What she detested most was her daughter–in–law’s lack of restraint. Madelyn was always out gallivanting, living a life of frivolity and inconsistency.

Sebastian was so exceptional. Countless women yearned to be with him, but they never had the opportunity.

In the end, he ended up falling for a woman like Madelyn.

Every time Marsha thought about this, she felt a knot of discontent in her heart.

“Mom, don’t worry. I understand.” At that moment, Madelyn suddenly said with an obedient look on her face.

Everyone was looking at her, seemingly taken by surprise.

“Since I’ve married into the Lockhart family, I am committed to being Sebastian’s wife for the rest of my life. From now on, I won’t entertain any thoughts about other men, let alone act in a way that’s unethical. Please, believe me.”

After she finished speaking, Madelyn gave everyone a slight nod.

For a moment, everyone was somewhat taken aback.

After all, it was well known that Madelyn had a rebellious and willful character. She always acted high and mighty. Yet, she was apologizing to them now.

She even spoke so sincerely.

Marsha was genuinely taken aback. Since Madelyn had already apologized, it wasn’t right to keep pressing her.

In the end, she reluctantly gave up. “Fine, as long as you understand. We’ll go back to our rooms first.”

After she finished speaking, Marsha left with Nigel.

Shortly after, Agnes and Steven went up as well.

In the large living room, only two people remained, their eyes locked on each other.

Sebastian looked at Madelyn, recalling the words she had just spoken. His heart skipped a beat.

Her honesty just now was so compelling that it was hard not to believe her.

After entering the house, Janessa swiftly kicked off her slippers, ready to head upstairs and wash away the day’s bad luck with a good, long bath.

Suddenly, a voice laced with sarcasm called out, “Oh, the disgrace has finally decided to show up, huh?”

The voice came from Scarlet, who was seated on a luxurious leather couch, diligently attending to her skincare routine. Rupert was seated right beside her.

“Dad, Mom,” said Janessa, her voice filled with reluctance.

Scarlet didn’t even bother to respond. She just scoffed and sarcastically said, “I heard you made quite a spectacle of yourself at the Lockhart family’s birthday banquet today. Instead of walking on the path, you somehow managed to fall into the water. Did you think you were a mermaid?”

Upon hearing those words, Janessa clenched her fists tightly, wishing she could immediately shut Scarlet up!

“I… I didn’t mean to.” She had no choice but to relent.

After all, she was just the mistress‘ daughter, living under someone else’s roof. She had no choice but to keep her head down when she spoke.

“Can’t you be more careful?” At that moment, Rupert suddenly sprang up and shouted angrily, “I warned you before you left. It’s a very important event, so you must be cautious and careful! What did you end up doing?”

“Dad, I… I didn’t do it on purpose. I’m sorry,” Janessa hastily apologized.

Rupert was upset in the heat of the moment. Now, taking a deep breath, he said, “Forget it. What’s done is done, there’s no use in dwelling on it. But remember, you better be careful not to provoke those you shouldn’t in important settings like that! We were fortunate today that the Lockhart family was lenient with us. Otherwise, who knows how much trouble we could have been in.”

“Yes, I understand. I’ll definitely remember this in the future.” Janessa obediently nodded, taking the lesson to heart.

Then, she returned to her room.

As soon as she returned to the room, her true nature was instantly revealed. A fierce and twisted expression appeared on her face. She grabbed whatever she could find on the desk and furiously threw it against the wall.

She was filled with intense hatred.

At home, she detested the fact that she was merely an illegitimate daughter and that Scarlet could always lord over her. She resented her father’s indifference towards her!

And, she despised Madelyn for being able to live with Sebastian, and for being treated as a cherished gem by her family.

Life is so unfair to me! Why is this happening?
