Chapter 221 If It Were Not For You
Ms. Moore, of course, was none other than Harriet.
โWhat is she doing here?โ Madelyn was slightly annoyed.
โMs. Moore mentioned that she has some official matters to report,โ Lydia said.
Sebastian didnโt even bother to raise an eyebrow. โLet her in.โ
Lydia nodded, then went to usher Harriet in.
Harriet, clad in a professional suit, exuded an aura of cold arrogance that made her seem unapproachable at first glance.
Of course, Harriet knew that if it werenโt for Madelyn feeling unwell, Sebastian would not have chosen to work from home.
Upon entering, Harriet courteously greeted Madelyn first, โMs. Thornton, I heard youโve been feeling unwell. Are you feeling better now?โ
How pretentious.
Madelyn sneered inwardly, then responded nonchalantly, โIโm much better. Thank you for your concern. But I wonder what pressing matter requires your personal visit to our home.โ
The tone of Madelynโs words made it blatantly clear that she did not welcome her.
Harrietโs expression subtly changed, but she held back her emotions and laughed. โOf course, itโs something very important.โ
โReallyโฆโ Madelyn uttered with a tone of disdain.
Harriet smiled generously, a hint of provocation in her gaze. โThis matter is of utmost importance, a company secret that outsiders shouldnโt hear. So, I must kindly ask you to step out for a while, Ms. Thornton.โ
What?
Outsiders? Did she just call me an outsider?
Madelyn instantly found herself a bit irked.
However, after giving it some thought, she had to admit Harrietโs position in Lockhart Group was indeed very high, so it was inevitable that she would know some secrets.
With a displeased pout, Madelyn reluctantly agreed to step aside.
After all, this was a matter concerning Lockhart Group, and Madelyn didnโt want to cause any trouble for Sebastian.
After stepping outside, Madelyn still felt a lingering sense of discontent.
What on earth does Harriet want to report that is so important?
In my past life, did anything significant occur after Sebastian returned home, wounded from abroad?
I donโt think so.
Madelyn racked her brains for a long time, but she couldnโt come up with anything.
She couldnโt help but feel a pang of regret. After all, her reprehensible behavior in her past life was to blame.
In her past life, every time an event related to Sebastian occurred, she had been utterly indifferent. She would even go out of her way to avoid it, fearing any potential association with Sebastian.
This led to her current predicament, where no matter how hard she thought, she couldnโt make sense of it all.
However, regardless of whether she could recall or not, Madelyn felt that she must have overlooked something. Otherwise, Harriet wouldnโt have come over.
But unable to come up with anything, Madelyn had no choice but to temporarily give up.
Fortunately, Harriet and Sebastianโs conversation didnโt last long. After a short while, they came out.
When she came out, Harriet gave Madelyn a meaningful glance.
โIโve said all there is to say. Iโll be going now,โ she said with a smile.
Once she finished speaking, Harriet, donning her high heels, left with an air of arrogance.
Madelyn frowned in place.
Oddly enough, she felt there was some hidden implication in Harrietโs glance earlier.
That feeling was as if something had happened, and she was the only one left in the dark, clueless.
Am I overthinking it?
Madelyn shook her head, sighing. Oh, forget it.
The following day, Madelyn finally went to the university, and immediately, Jillian and Josiah came over to express their concern.
โMadelyn, are you all right? What exactly is bothering you?โ Jillian sounded utterly worried.
Even though Josiah remained silent, his evidently concerned expression gave him away.
Madelyn felt a wave of warmth, gave a small smile, and said, โDonโt worry. Itโs nothing serious. Iโm feeling much better now.โ
โAre you sure?โ Josiah asked at that moment.
Madelyn nodded. โOf course.โ
Josiah said bluntly. โNow that youโre recovered, hereโs your script. You better memorize them quick! We have to rehearse this afternoon.โ
Madelyn wore a look of utter confusion.
Whatโs going on here? The flippant Josiah is actually so enthusiastic about a stage play?
โHey, Josiah, donโt tell me youโve decided to turn over a new leaf now that youโre in this university. Itโs just a stage play, yet youโre taking it so seriously. Am I dreaming? Are you really Josiah?โ Madelyn was utterly taken aback by him. Unable to resist her doubt, she reached out to pinch his cheek.
Josiah was instantly infuriated. He promptly pushed her hand away. โYou have the nerve to say that? If it werenโt for you, I wouldnโt give a damn about this lousy stage play! Iโm not someone they can just summon whenever they pleaseโฆโ
Seeing Josiah was about to lose his temper again, Madelyn quickly tried to soothe him. โAll right, all right, I get it. Iโll go memorize it right now.โ
After saying that, Madelyn quickly grabbed the script and made a hasty exit.
โMr. Josiah, please donโt be upset.โ Jillian tried to soothe him. โMadelyn has just recovered.โ
Josiah gave her a fierce glare. Startled, Jillianโs heart skipped a beat, and she immediately fell silent. She quietly returned to her seat, acting as if nothing had happened.
In the evening, they went for rehearsal.
After expressing his concern for Madelyn and ensuring she was in good health, Yadiel and the others began to rehearse according to the script.
During the day, Madelyn had already familiarized herself thoroughly with her lines. So at this moment, she quickly fell into rhythm with them in the play.
Unexpectedly, Madelyn immersed herself into the role incredibly quickly. Throughout the entire scene, she accurately captured the characterโs emotions during the setting of the time. Even though it was only their first rehearsal, she already embodied the essence of her character.
After the rehearsal, everyone was astounded by Madelyn. No one had expected her acting skills to be so impressive. She could easily rival many of the popular up-and-coming actresses of the time.
Jillian exclaimed in awe, โMadelyn, youโre so good-looking, and your acting skills are so good. Itโs a waste if you donโt become an actress!โ
Yadiel, standing by the side, nodded in agreement. โIt seems we indeed made the right choice for our female lead.โ
Everyone else also wore expressions of admiration.
Madelyn merely chuckled nonchalantly. Having lived two lifetimes, I ought to possess some acting skills. Otherwise, how am I supposed to fight with Janessa?
On the other hand, Janessaโs performance was disappointingly subpar.
Throughout the night, one mishap followed another. Either her lines werenโt delivered correctly, or her performance was simply terrible. She was supposed to portray a character of ultimate villainy, yet she intentionally gave off a pitiful vibe. This greatly displeased Yadiel, who thought that Janessa was being overly dramatic.
And so, Yadiel did not hold back at all. He gave a thorough critique, teaching Janessa various aspects of acting.
