Chapter 224 She Was Left With No Choice

As soon as the topic was mentioned, a hint of coldness appeared on Phantom’s face. It was evident that his heart was heavy.

Phantom’s partner, Nightingale, lost an arm to an energy explosion during a Class A mission the night before. Even though the mission was ultimately successful, the latter had lost an arm forever.

Initially, Phantom did not believe Madelyn, thinking she was simply skilled at spinning pretty lies to deceive others. However, the reality shockingly aligned perfectly with what Madelyn had described earlier. Therefore, Phantom was anxious to bring her back, eager to uncover the truth of the situation. He also wanted to find out about her abilities and understand exactly what was going on.

Upon hearing the news, Madelyn was simply overjoyed. That means I guessed correctly? So, I’m safe? Oh, that’s awesome! Madelyn was beyond thrilled, so much so that if she had been given a stage at that moment, she would have happily twirled around on it three hundred and sixty-five times. However, she dared not show any of those emotions on her face. If Phantom found out she was rejoicing while his buddy suffered such a terrible fate, he would be furious beyond measure, and not even ten lives would be enough to save her from Phantom’s wrath. Therefore, Madelyn appeared quite calm as she simply asked, “So, can you now keep your promise and let me go?”

For a fleeting moment, Phantom was impressed. In this world, besides Morgana, few women could remain so composed in front of him. In fact, it was safe to say that no one dared to, unless they were courting death. Madelyn, on the other hand, remained unbelievably calm, astonishingly so.

“Why are you so eager to leave?” Phantom asked all of a sudden.

Madelyn’s eyebrow twitched at his words. Is he unwilling to let me go? With that in mind, she could not help but voice her fear. “Didn’t you say it yourself? As long as I tell the truth, you would spare my life.”

“Can’t I change my mind?” Phantom chuckled.

Madelyn felt a cold chill run down her spine. Darn it, the esteemed Oceanic Empire has actually failed to keep their word. Haven’t my prophecies already proven...

Yet, Madelyn was well aware that she could not go head to head with the Oceanic Empire. Hence, she bit the bullet and asked, “May I know what I need to do for you to let me go?”

Phantom could not help but laugh when he saw her trembling with fear. And so, this woman’s earlier bravado was nothing more than a facade.

“Don’t worry, I’ve always been a man of my word. Besides, your life serves no purpose to me, so I have no intention of killing you. The threat earlier was merely a joke.” As he spoke, a captivating smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.

Instantly, Madelyn breathed a sigh of relief. Fck you! I was shocked to the core!*

Unexpectedly, Phantom added, “However, Ms. Morgana wants to meet you.”

What?

Madelyn was stunned, her heart skipping a beat. She couldn’t believe her ears and asked again, “Who did you just say wants to see me?”

“Have you forgotten the character you’ve portrayed so convincingly?” Phantom calmly retorted.

Madelyn felt terrible at that instant. Morgana actually wants to meet me!

Setting aside whether Madelyn was mentally prepared or not, she did not want to get involved with the Oceanic Empire in any way, even for the sake of her family. In her current life, everything felt like a butterfly effect, where a single action could trigger a chain reaction of events. The course of events had completely diverged from what had transpired in her previous life, and there were times when Madelyn found it impossible to foresee what was about to happen. Under such circumstances, trifling with the Oceanic Empire was a bad idea. Anyone who got tangled up with the Oceanic Empire was bound to face a multitude of unforeseen perils. Madelyn was well aware of her lack of power, so for the time being, she was not ready to take that risk.

So, she replied, “I’m sorry, I’m afraid I can’t go and see her.”

Phantom was angered by her response. He did not expect her to have the audacity to refuse him. “Ms. Thornton, do you really think you have a choice?”

“What do you mean?” Madelyn’s heart skipped a beat.

“Ms. Morgana’s orders always get carried out, no exceptions. You either obediently meet her, or you die,” Phantom threatened in a low voice, pressing a gun against Madelyn’s head.

Madelyn was nearly driven to her wit's end!

Despite having a gun pointed at her head, she complained. “Why don’t you keep your word? You’re supposed to be a major organization, but you can’t even keep a simple promise! If I had known this was the case, I would have just let you do as you pleased from the start!”

Phantom did not expect that she would get all worked up, and it left him somewhat helpless.

He reluctantly holstered the gun and explained, “We didn’t mean to harm you. Ms. Morgana simply took a liking to you and wants to befriend you.”

After hearing those words, Madelyn was baffled. Morgana wants to be my friend? Is that for real?

“As I said, it would be best if you agree, or else, death awaits,” Phantom repeated.

At that point, Madelyn finally realized she had no choice at all. Regardless of Morgana’s true intentions, it was wiser to meet once than to risk being immediately dismissed by Phantom. After all, there was nothing wrong with befriending Morgana. Moreover, Madelyn might need the Oceanic Empire’s help in the future to resolve some tricky issues. Upon considering, Madelyn nodded in agreement.

Then, she asked, “Do we have to meet right now?”

Phantom chuckled before composing himself. “What’s the rush? I only mentioned we need to meet, not that it’s happening right now. As for the specific time, I’ll inform you later. For now, you’re free.”

Madelyn was puzzled. Does this mean they are no longer keeping an eye on me?

“Hang on, I need to give you something.”

Right then, a nearby subordinate stepped forward and handed Madelyn a silver badge.

“What’s this?” the perplexed Madelyn asked.

Phantom explained, “The Oceanic Empire has multiple bases in this city, and this casino is one of them. This badge grants you unrestricted access to our bases. Someone will greet you upon your arrival. Consider this a small favor.”

Madelyn nodded, receiving the badge handed to her carefully.

She then asked, “So, can I leave now?”

“Of course,” Phantom gave a slight nod, his gaze returning to its earlier lightness.

Just then, some sexy ladies appeared, huddling around Phantom.

Only then did Madelyn breathe a sigh of relief. Subsequently, she was guided by a few of Phantom’s subordinates and made her way out of the perilous situation.
