Reborn to My Engagement Night Chapter 85: Are You Backing Out?
After Madelyn hung up the phone, a smirk unwittingly curved her lips.
"Janessa, I shall see just how you plan to set me up tonight!"
Then, she changed into a lightweight, elegant chiffon dress and slipped into her perfectly fitting black high heels. Carrying herself with grace, she left home.
Upon arriving at Royal Club, she went straight to the private room.
As expected, the private room was filled with a number of her classmates. It was lively, yet somewhat chaotic at the same time.
Some were engrossed in singing, some played beer pong, some drank like there was no tomorrow, and yet others were engaged in flirtatious banter.
At that moment, Janessa caught sight of Madelyn and immediately rose from the couch.
โAh, our birthday girl has arrived!โ
Janessa rushed forward as she spoke, intimately linking her arm with Madelynโs. Her enthusiasm was palpable.
Madelyn pursed her lips, feeling a bit repulsed.
Upon seeing that, a classmate at the side couldnโt help but ask, โYou both made up?โ
Janessa chuckled, a glint of craftiness flashing across her eyes.
โOf course! We are best friends. Even if we get upset at each other, itโll only be temporary.โ
Upon hearing that, Madelyn couldnโt help snorting coldly.
Who made up with her? I'm just playing along with her. Give her an inch, and sheโll really take a mile!
โMadelyn, I even prepared a birthday gift for you. But Iโm not sure if youโll like it.โ
โReally?โ Madelyn asked, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. โLet me have a look at it.โ
Janessa made her way back to the couch and took out the gift.
โLook, this is the latest stylish Gucci fox leather bag I prepared for you. Isnโt it nice?โ
As she spoke, she raised her voice as if she intentionally wanted everyone to hear her.
The bagโs design was particularly exquisite. The leather appeared to be a high-end material, and the tasteful addition of a few patches of fur lent it an air of luxury and a touch of cuteness.
The others present were instantly dazzled, gasping in awe. โWow! Iโve seen this bag before. It was newly launched just a couple of days ago, priced at over thirty thousand.โ
On the surface, however, she feigned indifference. โThis is nothing. Itโs just thirty thousand. My friendship with Madelyn is worth much more than that. Donโt you agree, Madelyn?โ
Madelyn took the bag from her, finding her ridiculous inwardly.
Does she really think Iโm an idiot and am easily fooled?
The style of the bag was indeed from the latest collection of the renowned brand, Gucci.
Regrettably, her eyes were as sharp as a hawkโs. At a single glance, she could instantly tell that it was nothing more than a mere counterfeit.
Even if the leather was a top-notch imitation, it felt different to the touch. At most, the bag only cost two thousand, not a penny more.
But after some thought, Madelyn feigned gratitude and said, โThank you. I really like it.โ
Immediately, Janessa was filled with smugness.
I knew it! How could a dumb woman like her possibly know this is a counterfeit?
So, she continued boasting, โIโm glad you like it. I especially had a friend buy it in Atharia. Itโs not sold here in the country.โ
Madelyn smiled wryly, her brows furrowing in exasperation.
Sheโs really a terrible liar. Though this handbag has just been launched, itโs already available for sale in Hestrya. That aside, itโs already on the shelves among the high-end luxury items in the city.
โOh yes, Madelyn, I helped you ask Christopher out tonight! Howโs that? Pretty considerate of me, huh?โ
With that said, Janessa leaned in to whisper in her ear. โHowever, he might be a bit late, so letโs get started first?โ
Upon hearing that, Madelyn nodded nonchalantly. โSure.โ
Anyway, she came prepared. Since Janessa wanted to play, she was more than willing to oblige.
Following that, everyone gathered together. They ate, sang, and played games.
Every so often, someone would crack a joke, causing everyone to burst into laughter. The atmosphere was pretty good.
After sitting amidst them for a while, Madelyn thought to herself. It should be about time, right?
Sure enough, Janessa picked up the microphone just then and stood up. โEveryone, quiet down!โ
The private room promptly fell silent. Everyone focused their attention on Janessa.
As expected, Janessa suggested, โSince weโre having such a great time today, why donโt we play a game together?โ
โSure!โ everyone agreed immediately.
โOkay!โ Everyoneโs enthusiasm was remarkable.
Madelyn watched it all with a cool detachment, still as calm and composed inwardly.
All this is truly the same as my previous life. Tik-tsk, how interesting.
And so, the game began...
Janessa found a wine bottle, placed it horizontally at the center of the table, and started spinning it.
For the first, second, and third rounds, it pointed at the other students.
Those singled out went back on their word and refused to kiss anyone. Consequently, Janessa made them drink five glasses of wine as punishment.
By the time the fourth round came around, things started changing.
The bottle spun several rounds on the table without showing any signs of stopping.
Madelyn pretended to look elsewhere, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw someone casually nudging it while pretentiously picking up her wine glass. The mouth of the bottle then conveniently turned toward her.
She couldnโt help but snort coldly. Tactfully, she suddenly reached out and grabbed a handful of nuts.
As her hand passed by the wine bottle, she casually flicked one out.
Under the dim lighting, that action was incredibly subtle.
No one noticed as the nut and the wine bottle gently collided against each other. This slight impact was enough to change the direction of the wine bottle.
Finally, it pointed right at Janessa, who sat beside her.
Janessaโs expression instantly froze. โHow could it be me?โ
It should have been Madelyn!
Right then, Madelyn looked at her with a beaming smile. โJanessa, how lucky of you. Quick, go. Youโre supposed to kiss the first person who walks through the door.โ
โButโฆโ Janessa conflictedly looked at the others before saying regretfully. โPerhaps I should just drink as well.โ
Having said that, she made to lift her wine glass.
However, Madelyn would never give her a chance to back out.
She reached out, intercepting her from drinking the wine in her hand.
โThat wonโt do at all. Itโs one thing for others to drink, but Janessa, youโre my closest friend. Todayโs my birthday, so you canโt be a wet blanket. Besides, with so many people watching, do you want them to look down on you thinking youโre a coward?"
A classmate at the side chimed in at that moment, โExactly! You were the one who set the rule, Janessa. You canโt take the lead and back out.โ
โโฆbut Iโฆโ Janessa stammered, looking at everyone.
โAh, no buts. Quick, just go,โ Madelyn urged, fanning the flames.
Seeing everyoneโs expectant expressions, Janessa hesitated for a long time.
In the end, she had no choice but to bite the bullet and stand up.
