Chapter 14
Grace knew exactly who Liban was referring to. Erin assumed that everything she was doing now was for Yancey. No one would believe otherwise, no matter how much she denied it.
“Mr. Henderson, I really just need money. I’m looking for a job, and Henderson Group offers a good salary and can handle hard work.”
When someone claimed they could handle hard work, it would only invite themselves an endless amount of hard work. Grace understood that, but she still wanted to get into Henderson Group. She needed to find out what had really happened to Ethan’s legs. She needed to know what transpired between them in the past.
Riding in the car, Ethan suddenly let out a soft, mocking laugh. A chill ran down Grace’s spine. Apparently, she had unknowingly pushed one of his buttons. He closed his eyes, his face completely devoid of emotion.
“If you want to join the company so much, help yourself!”
Toe’s eyes sparkled at that, and she quickly bowed. “Thank you! Come in tomorrow to process the paperwork.” Thun didn’t respond, and the car window slowly rolled up.
“It was only after he passed through the iron gate that he finally spoke to Tim. “Don’t do that.”
“Mr. Henderson, I just don’t trust her. She has ulterior motives. She’s going to stir up trouble with Yancey again, and you’ll end up dealing with the fallout.”
Then, he directed his gaze to the window, his fingers resting lightly on the tile next to him. He said nothing. Tim sighed—there was nothing more he could say. He hated Grace to the core. If she disappeared, he would consider it a blessing.
Meanwhile, Yancey had just finished dinner with Alice. He took her shopping and bought her several designer bags. Normally, whenever he took Alice out alone, Grace always found a way to interfere. It only made him despise her more. But tonight, things went surprisingly smoothly. He had prepared a long list of insults to throw at her, but he didn’t even get to use them.
“What are you thinking about?” Alice asked softly.
Yancey lifted her chin and scowled at the fading redness on her cheek. “Why is it still not gone?”
The low-end glare, looking pitiful. “Maybe by tomorrow. Lately, Grace’s temper has been bad. She even slapped Liam. He’s still upset about it.”
“She’s getting more and more out of control, and your parents just let it slide?”
“Every time they scold her, she threatens to leave home. This time, she was gone for two days. Mom’s so upset she’s fallen ill.”
Yancey’s expression darkened with disgust. Whoever had Grace as a daughter must have been cursed.
“Good thing your family has you, Alice. I heard you made another few million dollars on that investment. That’s impressive.”
Alice smiled. “I own ten percent of the company, and I’ve spent so much at home I have to contribute.”
“Someone’s been leeching off the Lambert family for years, doing absolutely nothing, while you’ve only been back for five years and already manage projects better than anyone. You’re both siblings, yet there’s such a stark difference,” Yancey observed.
The next morning, Grace dressed simply and went straight to Henderson Group to report for work. Just as she was completing her paperwork in the HR department, she ran into Yancey stepping out of the elevator. She was surprised she hadn’t caused trouble last night. He glared at her and sharply commanded, “Grace, I don’t care what you do outside, but I’ve told you a thousand times that Henderson Group is not your playground!”
She looked at his frustrated expression and felt an inexplicable irritation growing inside her. Yancey’s gaze darkened. “You’re only making me despise you. And don’t think I’ve forgotten that you slapped Alice. You should be thankful I don’t hit women.”
And then, without further ado, he handed Grace her company ID. She placed it around her neck and booked it directly to the elevator.
“As an employee of Henderson under Yancey, I didn’t come here for you. You’re not that special.”
Then, the skies immediately darkened, becoming ominous otherwise. Honestly, would someone as wealthy as you suddenly want a job?
