The Fuller family, Khogend's wealthiest, were highly sought-after. The Lawson family, however, possessed a century-old prestigious heritage, embodying the very definition of elite. Among Khogend's four ruling families, the Lawsons stood preeminent, their position unmatched. A marriage alliance with them would greatly benefit the Fullers.
This alliance had been planned eighteen years prior. Myra, seven months pregnant with her second child, attended an event despite her condition. A massive screen fell, plunging everyone into terror. Yet, amidst the screams, Myra emerged unharmed; she'd been miraculously positioned within a gap created by displaced scaffolding.
A doctor present exclaimed, "Mrs. Fuller's baby is fortunate! This child is blessed! It's a rare occurrence!"
This incident became legend. Believing it an omen, Matthew Lawson made a pact with the Fullers: if the child was a girl, their families would unite in marriage, with his grandson proposing at eighteen. No one anticipated a baby swap. Kayla and Arnold, childhood sweethearts deeply in love, had discussed this engagement repeatedly. Felicia's sudden emergence, however, altered everything.
"This must be fate!" Holly exclaimed, subtly glaring at Felicia. "Ms. Kayla and Mr. Lawson are a well-recognized couple. Nobody should harbor wishful delusions!"
This pointed remark went unnoticed by Myra and Dexter, who remained focused on Kayla. Leaning against her mother, Kayla's face flushed with excitement. "Mom, is it true Mr. Lawson Senior will announce the proposal at the party the day after tomorrow?"
Myra smiled. "Of course. Both families are pleased with your union with Arnold. You're an adult now; it's time to formalize the engagement."
Dexter agreed. "Exactly."
The families had long consented to the marriage. Even Felicia's arrival wouldn't change that.
This confirmation thrilled Kayla. As Mrs. Lawson, no one, not even knowing she was adopted, would dare to slight her. With a hint of pride and disdain, she looked at Felicia, who ignored her and headed upstairs.
Kayla followed, feigning innocence. "You're not upset I took your place? Without me, the engagement would have been yours, and you'd have grown up with Arnold. But after eighteen years, feelings outweigh status, don't you agree, Felicia?"
Kayla's words were dripping with arrogance. Felicia glanced back, her expression suggesting, "You want this? Go ahead, it's yours." Then she closed the door.
Kayla sneered. "What's the act for? Don't cry later!"
Meanwhile, at the Lawson residence, after confirming his health, Matthew asked Morgan, "Have the gifts been delivered to the Fuller family?"
"Yes, sir," Morgan replied.
Matthew nodded, picking up a well-worn report detailing the young woman who'd saved him in the accident. A slightly blurred ID photo showed delicate features, an air of detachment. Printed boldly: Felicia Fuller. She was Dexter and Myra's biological daughter, from Khogend's wealthiest family, switched at birth and recently returned. The report detailed her eighteen years of growth.
Matthew reread it, his eyes flashing. "So it is her."
Morgan cautiously asked, "You sent gifts without mentioning Ms. Felicia. What if they think it's for the imposter?"
Matthew scoffed. "A misunderstanding is preferable. The Fullers are oblivious. Even with their real daughter home, they'll favor the imposter. Felicia will be overlooked. I'll offer support; she'll be grateful and accept Arnold's engagement."
He set the report aside. "Tell Arnold to join me at the Fullers' party this weekend!"
The reunion party arrived. The Fuller residence was lavishly decorated. A red carpet extended to the street; champagne and desserts adorned the tables. At 7:00 PM, luxury cars arrived, carrying Khogend's elite.
Dexter and Myra greeted their guests. Kayla, in a stunning white haute couture gown, sparkled under the lights.
The Lawson family arrived. Kayla rushed to greet them before the car door even opened. Arnold and Matthew emerged.
"Hello, Mr. Lawson Senior!" Kayla chirped, then, shyly, to Arnold, "Arnie, I loved the surprise!"
