Felicia retrieved the hat Carmen had dropped, handing it back gently. "It's windy on the rooftop," she said. "You shouldn't come up here next time."
"It's none of your business," Carmen retorted, taking the hat and turning away.
Felicia started to speak, but Carmen glared, warning coldly, "Stay away from me, or you'll regret it." The threat was unmistakable. Felicia could only manage a helpless smile.
Just then, the campus intercom announced an urgent meeting for all freshmen at the field. Felicia frowned, wondering if it was a welcome party or celebration.
However, upon arriving at the field, she saw Arnold standing beside the college director. Unease washed over her.
On stage, Blake cleared his throat. "I have good news! Mr. Lawson has generously donated one million to cover the costs of this year's freshmen training. In addition to the training, we'll have a voluntary rural teaching and donation activity! This year marks our college's centennial, so we'll allocate another million for books, stationery, and supplies to donate to schools in the areas we'll be serving. The training lasts half a month. The areas are quite impoverished, so be prepared! Are you interested in participating?"
Gasps rippled through the crowd, followed by cheers as soon as Blake posed the question. Everyone wanted to be involved. This was the college's first such training programโa significant departure from traditionโand it sounded exciting.
Blake nodded, pleased. "Our vice principal and Mr. Lawson will lead the training. Obey the rules; no mischief!" Departure was set for early the day after tomorrow.
The cheers intensified, but Felicia's brow furrowed. In her previous life, there had been no such training; only the centennial celebration. During that ceremony, she had been engaged to Arnold but watched helplessly as he danced with Kayla in the spotlight, their happiness the envy of everyone. The bullying afterward had only worsened.
What about this life? A strange foreboding washed over Felicia. Events felt slightly out of sync, yet fundamentally followed the original storyline. Her gaze met Arnold's across the crowd. Even from a distance, his gaze was intense, hot, and piercingโfilled with hatred.
Since the engagement party had been ruined and Matthew hospitalized, the pressure to marry Arnold had lessened; the engagement seemed indefinitely postponed. Yet, something felt amiss. Matthew, determined to unite her with Arnold, wouldn't give up easily. What, then, did Arnold's strange behavior signify? Was it directed at her?
