Johanna refused to believe the investigation results implicated the Fuller family. How could it not be related? Unless Stephan was protecting them. Heartbroken, her eyes reddening, she asked, โStephan, is it because of Ms. Fuller that youโre not pursuing Archieโs murderer?โ
He remained silent. The investigation had only marked the Fuller family as suspects; there was no concrete proof. Based on his usual methods, Stephan always believed in apprehending suspects, even if a mistake were made, rather than letting someone go free. So why hadn't he acted against the Fullers? He could deceive others, but not himself. It was because Felicia Fuller shared the same last name.
Standing in the shadows, his voice cold and slow, Stephan said, โI will find out the truth in three days at most.โ
Three days? Johanna felt like sneering. She couldn't wait three hours; she wanted to wipe out the Fuller residence, tie up every family member, and kill them all! What if Stephan found no evidence? Would Archie have died for nothing? Dizziness clouded her vision, a consequence of her concussion or agitation. She suppressed it.
โStephan, I trust you. I know youโll give me and Archie an explanation.โ Tears welled in her eyes, her gaze bright with reliance and trust. Johanna was sure any other man would have been softened by her display.
After a pause, she continued, โStephan, I can tell youโre not indifferent toward Ms. Fuller. Butโฆ she seems quite close to that man today. They look very well-matchedโฆโ
She didnโt know Maurice, but seeing Felicia get into his car fueled her urgency. She had to tell Stephan, to make sure he didn't overlook Felicia's flighty nature and numerous male acquaintances.
โAs far as I know, Ms. Fuller was even engaged to the Lawson heir in a grand ceremony. She's skillful at managing men. Such methods suggest she's even more unscrupulous in privateโฆโ
โShut up!โ Stephan's sharp command stopped her. His anger was palpable, a growing menace. Frightened, her heart racing, she stammered, โStephanโฆโ
โIโll let this slide out of respect for Archie, but there wonโt be a next time.โ He turned and left, leaving a chilling presence in his wake.
It took Johanna a long time to calm down. Her hands shook. When angry, he radiated a terrifying murderous intent. She was sure that if not for Archie, Stephan might have killed her in his rage! Was it just because she'd spoken badly of Felicia? Felicia was truly a thorn in her side. She clenched her fists. For Archie's vengeance, or perhaps her own sharp intuition, she knew she had to act.
